I recently purchased a home built metric FAL SA58. It has a DSA upper receiver on an Imbel kit. The seller said he had it headspaced by a gunsmith. I took it to the range over the weekend for the first time. I shot 50 rounds of Magtech ammo.
approx. 30 spent cases ejected about 12 feet in a 1 or 2 o'clock direction.
approx. 15 spent cases flopped 4-12 inches in a 3 to 4 o'clock direction.
1 spent casing came directly back and bounced off the top of my head.
1 spent casing was left on the magazine follower facing the correct direction.
1 spent casing flopped over and was on the magazine follower facing the wrong way.
1 spent casing remained in the chamber and was stuck. (The bolt did come back and could move freely, but it did not extract the spent casing. I resorted to tapping the spent casing out of the chamber successfully from the muzzle end with a cleaning rod.)
The rim of the cases where the extractor pulled was peeled back on most of the cases.
Most of the rounds I shot were loaded 1 round at a time. I have a case of Magtech, so I would like to make it work consistently with this ammo. This is my first FAL, and I know next to nothing about them. Since my range trip, I did some research on this topic and found some helpful info about the gas setting and starting with 7 and working your way down until it cycles properly and then setting it with two more clicks. I checked my gas setting, and the previous owner had it set about two thirds of the way closed. There are no numbers on mine, but it is probably between 2 and 3. I signed up with the forum Falfiles.com, but I am waiting for approval to post, which apparently takes about a week or more to process. It seems like it is getting lots of gas. Does it need more? Does it have too much gas? Extractor issues? Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
