Need help pulling Operating Rod from SOCOM

    Hello folks,

Would love some advice on how to remove the operating rod from the SA SOCOM reciever. The generic SA M1A manual makes it seem so easy...but it is far from easy.

Its basically just pulling the tab back to the notch, then pulling up and out away from the receiver in a tilting motion.

On new M1a's it will take some effort.

Align the tab on the receiver with the dismount knotch. Get a screwdriver. If you want, wrap it in electrical tape (or don't--it won't scratch). Pull the oprod handle up while prying the hump of the oprod away from the receiver with the screwdriver. It shouldn't take hardly any pressure to get it to pop out.

After you get it out check the oprod out good. My oprod on my Socom II was burred up and took me a bit to get it out. I saw the burr almost right away and realized what the problem was. I filed it and reinstalled it and now it comes out easy. It may not be an issue for you as mine was from when they first came out and I only shot 50 or so rounds before i cleaned it. My friend had the same problem his was the next in line serial number though. I used the screwdriver method mentioned above to get mine out finally.

Thanks for the excellent info and advice. I will give the screwdriver a shot. I love how "easy" the SOCOM breaks down...the only problem I have had has been with the op rod....

My M1 Garand breaks down very easily and the Op Rod just pops out with very little effort. However, it IS over 50 years old...
