I have been building AKs since returning from Iraq back in 2009 however recently I have hit my second burnout on building them so its time to try something different for a little while.
Looking for some interesting projects I have gone off on a bit of a sub-gun tangent working on builds of PPS-43 carbines, Sten MKII and an Uzi (to compliment my Sterling and Suomi M31). The Uzi is by far the easiest of the three and I was able to acquire all the parts to complete the basic build first so here it is.
My build consists of:
Receiver sourced from NoDak Spud
Uzi completion kit and front hand grip from Robert RTG
Barrel from Green Mountain
US semi auto sear and US grip panels fro D&D Sales
Fixed buttstock and semi auto bolt group from the WTS forum at Uzi Talk
Bullet button grip panel from Gun Broker (not recommended)
Buffer from my parts bin (it was a leftover from when i had a real semi auto Uzi)
This is the receiver as received from NoDak Spud:

And after 10 minutes here's the quick and dirty assembly ready for test fire:

After test fire I'll install the front sling swivel, apply a finish and reassemble.
This project was definitely not as cheap as buying a Vector at pre-panic pricing but with the current asking prices for them this was the way to go for me plus I think the NoDak receiver is a superior product. If you are looking for a super easy Legoesque build I recommend doing one of these. After all who can't use an(other) Uzi
As for my comments on the bullet button grip panel above I cannot recommend this item. I feel it is an absolutely great idea but poorly executed. First issue I had was that the thing arrived postage due which is definitely not very professional.
That being said the main (and most important) issue is it simply did not fit well out of the envelope and after modifying to fit the thing cracked. Installed as received the mag release could not be moved at all. My solution was to the heat the grip and insert a magazine part way at which time the clamping force of the grips screwed together allowed the grip to form around the now raisedtop edge of the mag release however the plastic did crack along there. Yes it still works but the designs weakness is that they didn't allow enough room between the mag release and the grip panel.
The seller commented that they suspected out of spec parts. I'm sorry but the grip housing is genuine Israeli and I had the same issue on a semi auto grip housing that I tried fitting the grip panel to. I contacted a couple of other users of this item and they also reported the same fitting issue and one had a cracked grip as well.
Next time I will install a sheet metal shroud that will be attached via the mag release pivot pin and clearance the left side grip for it.
