    Input on stain job

Been working on this for about 3 days, finally got the stain to somewhat match but not perfect.

    What do you guys think?

What would you do to make it match a little more?

I'm talking about the difference between the stock and hand guards.

Wow! That looks awfully red for a walnut stain. I'd advise removing it and starting over.

Take a look at Watco Danish Oil Finishes. I used medium walnut on a Browning 22 rifle stock followed with several thin coats of clear polyurethane, sanding lightly between coats. Finish with 0000 steel wool and rub with a old terrycloth towl for a great satin finish.

    I hope this helps. http://www.woodnshop.com/Watco_danish_oil.htm

I actually like the red just can't get it to match up with the stock for the life of me.

Since the hand guards and butt stock are made from different woods they will not accept the stain equally. In addition the butt stock is laminated so it has at least two colors in it to start with. The lighter color in the laminated butt is a good match for the hand guards. Call it close enough and move on.

Thanks for your input guys. Just out a coat of poly and sanded it with steel wool 0000. Looks good.

bleach out all the wood, then restain and it will match ...more or less.

A really light coat of some brown stain on the handguards should get the colors a bit closer.
I use that trick on my bulgarian furniture sets.

You could find a Rocker woodworkers store near you and go get some dye for the stain and monkey with it for a year and never get it as close as you have it right now.
If it looks good in your eyes go with it.

After I took the picture I put a coat of poly on it and then sanded it with steel wool 0000. After I did that it looked much better. I'd say about a 90% match in my eyes.

                      It's still an A??
