Any gunsmith recommendations for Southern CA. I need a mauser barrel cut, set back headspaced and front sight installed.

Dear Randall It's a 1896 Mauser (Swedish - 6.5X55) it was rebarreled by a friend but it closes easily on my no go gauge so I have not fired it. It has iron sights so the front sight needs to be reinstalled. Where are you located? Regards Randy

I had a 1898 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser sporterized by Kimber, killed a deer with it, couldn't get the rounds over 2500 fps with out them popping primers, just wouldn't take it, may be Randall can help you out with that.

I am in van Nuys.
How is the front sight installed now? Solder or screws?
It might be easier to just set the barrel back a full turn to time up the front sight to the same spot, then deepen the chamber to correct headspace.

Dear Randall The front sight is attached with solder { there are no screws } - front sight looks to be mounted just like factory military issue. I could keep length the same and just set back 1 or 2 turns {as you suggest} if that is the most cost effective. What do you think this would cost? Thanks Randy

I'd like to see the gun and check it out a bit before I quote the job, but my best guess is somewhere between $50 and $90.
