I will soon be completing a raw paperweight and am planning on having it anodized. I also have a black anodized stripped upper. I am not going black with this build and was wondering if it's possible to re-anodize my upper to match the lower? I am looking at a tan color.

Yes, you can have the black chemically stripped and then the upper can be anodized again in the color of your choice. -
Ok you can not type III anodize in any other color but black and clear.
Type II is the soft anodize and can be colored but the color is transparent like a candy color. You can have a bead blasted finish but it will not look like a flat dark earth.
What you need is a Cerokote job.Comment

Type III is hard to control color .. so most places won't try and match a color..NRA Member

Well, sorta, but..... As noted above, it can be done, but the colors aren't guaranteed, often dull, and difficult to match. As you say, Cerokote is far better.Ok you can not type III anodize in any other color but black and clear.

I used to do scope mounts in different colors, but it's not really wirth even trying
Different alloys ( hard ano) even when done clear will be different. Even the same alloy of a different lot/melt or different tumbling time or media will make a difference. Ex: 7075 will have a different hue than 6061 when done in hard ano clear (or natural). There are some people that it's just not worth engaging.

And thats why every anodize shop I've dealt with say type III is black or clear only.Well, sorta, but..... As noted above, it can be done, but the colors aren't guaranteed, often dull, and difficult to match. As you say, Cerokote is far better.

Hmm that's good to know, thanks guys. I saw in this forum where another member had his paperweight anodized to match the magpul tan furniture but I didn't realize it wasn't type III.Pm me for the best prices around on front sight Diamond Memberships plus free course certificates so you can bring a friend!Comment

Type III anodizing will ONLY accept color if the thickness is just beyond the borderline between a Type II and Type III.
Type III that is done in the middle thickness upto the max thickness will not accept color. That is because the new Type III formulas are now putting in additives to make the coating tight and not porous because of micro fracture issues.Comment
