plz help with 80% lower????

What's the deal with 80% builds i dont understand.. how is it that you build one? do you buy an upper and make the lower and bam you have an 80% build? what's the process.. i want to build a few but i dont want to get in any trouble.

What is an 80% build?

OK - you want to play. I get that. We all do.

What an 80% is........ is a partially machined receiver ("paperweight") not considered to be a firearm and usually supported with a BATF letter stating the limitations for compliance.

The owner of the 80% "paperweight" must do the final 20% themselves to adhere the the DOJ requirements about manufacturing for personal use.

The builds that we see here are 10/22, AR15 & ARs in 308, recently 1911 and 2011. OK I am not forgetting the AK stuff but just a beginner should not be looking there.

The 10/22 seems by far to be the simplest one to start with but the major hype is the AR15. (again not dissing the AK variants)

Although the 80% AR has been accomplished by many here (I recently read that California and Calguns is where to come for 80% info) it does require some machine tool expertise. Many can complete with a drill press and a X-Y table but a mill is probably best to use unless you partake in one of the many "build" parties done mostly with a CNC.

80% forgings are blocks of aluminum that are shaped like AR-15 (or10) lower receivers.
With some careful work, you can mill them out to be functioning firearms.
This "home-built" firearm is legal to own and use, but there are some prohibitions on its sale.
What is important is that you do all the work yourself. You cannot have someone else manufacture a firearm for you without making the transfer through a FFL.

The popularity of 80% builds began with making pistol marked lowers, which could not be imported to Cali. The current attraction is both the availability and the fact that your lowers need not be registered (unless it is for a pistol build, which would allow you to possess the 10" and 7" uppers you still see available).

Be confidant that you understand the various laws regarding home-built firearms and pistols before you begin your project, there is the potential to go far astray of California law without knowing or trying.

Look up some more 80% builds here. You may want to buy/borrow a jig or attend a build party if you do not have the machinery/experience to mill. They are often listed in the Services Offered forum because people charge for their guidance & tool rental

Regardless, if you find an 80% for less than $150, buy it now and figure out what to do with it later, or sell it for more in the next "crisis".

Pistols vs rifles

When a manufacturer builds a firearm, it is catagorized as either a handgun or a long gun.

So if you want an AR pistol, you must buy an AR that was manufactured to be a pistol

I do not know of anyone who is currently manufacturing an AR pistol...

So if you want one, uou can choose to build your own.

The receivers are the same dimensionally but once cataforized as a long gun it cannot be changed into a pistol
