    1911 operation question

I know this is a probably a simple question but I'm just trying to better educate myself on the way the 1911 pistols function.

When the slide returns forward after a shot what does it stop against?

Is this an excessive wear area for the 1911? I ask because the slide on my colt 1991 compact model really seems to slam home hard compared to my browning hi-Power.

    thanks,
    Jim

The slide stop! The recoil spring is just heavier in a 1911, since the round is more powerful. I'm sure it's a lot of force, but I have many 1000's of rounds of .45 through my two 1911s.

wtf are you talking about? The slide stops because the slide and barrel are in "lockup".

OP take your 1911 apart.. There are 2 grooves on your slide and 2 on the barrel. The link and pin allow the back of the barrel to move down and out of the way. The slides moves rearward... as it returns to battery the barrel and slide will begin to engage. The slide will slot into the barrel and stop...

The front radius ear on the bottom of the barrel hit the slide stop pin, this is how the 1911 slide stop itself. These ears do break of, but very rare.

          thanks vmwerks and thai562

I see what you guys are saying now

guess I need a source for some illustrated 1911 parts diagrams and nomenclature.

          thanks,
          Jim

              skipper thanks for the animation.

after taking the pistol apart again and looking at it I see what you guys are saying.

I guess I really didn't think thru the operation enough.

I'm sure I'll have some more stupid questions.

Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...
