I have a stripped grip screw on my sig 226. I think I can either tap it to be bigger and use a different screw or I can helicoil it. If either of those will work let me know. Or if you have any other answers i'm eager to learn and hear what you have to say. Any help is appreciated!

Stripped grip screw! HELP!

I have no idea what the thread is on those screws, but if they make the size you need, I'd use a time-sert rather than a helicoil.sigpicOriginally posted by Dr. ElkyIf your a man who wears white sunglasses, your probably a douche bagOriginally posted by CSACANNONEERI've been know to cross dress and go the other way at certain events. -
Not sure of the thread size, but here is the link for the time serts: http://www.timesert.com/index.html. Find the size & pitch of the bolt, then measure the thickness of the frame @ the screw hole & see if they have an insert that short. Time sert are def the way to go. I use them every week in my shop on engines, but sometimes i can't use them & have to use a helicoil. If done properly & care is used when installing or removing your grips may work for a while. I would prob say that its a temp fix. Not sure if this wood help: http://www.brownells.com/handgun-par...prod24892.aspx. Or you could have someone carefully tig weld the hole part way up & re-tap back to original size.
Good luck,

Its not a high tension screw, just holds the grips in place. Thread lock or super glue would work. Doing a helicoil would be doing it right.Comment

wrap some duct tape around both grips nice and tight. Id recommend the tape to be tacticool gray in color imo.Originally posted by Gwalker99""Calgunners couldn't wait to start falling all over themselves as to how to best comply""

Lacking a timesert, I would make a little steel insert and reverse counterbore the frame so that the insert pulls its way into place as the screw is tightened.

Thanks for the responses!
The previous owner or the one before him used super glue or something to that effect. It still came loose. That's when I discovered the problem. I'll check out the time sert but am leaning towards the helicoil or bigger tapped screw. And no there will be no Home Depot self tapping or Duct Tape wrapping for my guns! But advice is advice and I thank you all!
Now back to tinkering...
