    Ak in 22lr?

Hi guys, i dunno if this is a total boneheaded idea, but anybody know anything about building up an AK to fire .22 lr cartridges? I couldn't find much when searching around.

I'm thinkin about going to an AK build party and want to know about the viability of this idea. Is this a reasonable build, or will this be incredibly difficult to put together? This way it'll be legal to have evil features and plink with 22. I want to avoid conversion kits (like Ciener stuff for AR's) b/c i don't want any legal troubles with this.

    Thanks!

It will be a lot cheaper and a lot easier to buy an already built trainer. I don't have any idea if .22 trainer kits have ever been available.

Aren't most of those things beat to hell with all the "training" that they've done?
Anyhow, i mainly brought this up b/c i want a 22 and i want to learn how to build an AK. Figured i'd hit two birds with one stone.

The trainers that I've seen are new or almost new. If you ever find .22lr kits, let me know! I'd be up for building one too. But, I think building a 7.62x39 is the way to go.

These Caliber Conversions contain all the parts necessary to change your firearm from it's existing caliber down to the inexpensive .22LR rimfire cartridge. The conversion takes just minutes, and is achieved with no permanent alterations to your firearm. It can be quickly returned to it's original caliber.
They allow semi-auto mode of fire in the AK family of firearms.

Yea, but the OP didn't want a conversion kit. He is looking to build a dedicated .22lr AK style rifle.

You got two choices if you want to "build" a .22 ak

              1. Buy and DROS a WASR 22 and cut up the receiver, now you have an affordable .22 kit to build with.

              2. Dig deep and buy one of these kits, then prepare for sticker shock when you start looking for extra mags

Personally, I'd just pick up a WASR 22 and change out the furniture

Gotcha. Definitely not able to kill two birds with one stone by building my own .22 AK. Having an AK with evil features and a 22 conversion kit doesn't exactly make me comfy.

                Thanks for the info guys!

The WASR-22 is a piece of crap.

Some are, some aren't. In typical Century style they tend to vary in quality and function. My friend has one and it works pretty well but he has tweaked it a little to keep spent cases from staying in the receiver. I personally find .22s in any style a turn-off, to me they are about as much fun as a pellet gun but my kids like them so I will probably pick up a Wasr 22 soon anyway.
