There are a couple of ways to do this. Does the thread protector wiggle if you try to turn it? There are most likely some welds near the barrel. You can use a dremel with a grinding bit and grind these welds until the protector spins off, or if you're impatient like me, use a cut off wheel in the Dremel and carefully cut a slit from front to back in the protector, making sure to not go all the way through the protector and into Make another slit on the other side of the protector, put a crappy old flat blade screwdriver in the slit and give it a twist. The protector should just snap and you can just kind of peel it off. Any AK muzzle brake that fits the threads on the muzzle is good to go. I prefer the AK 74 style? But its all personal preference.

Take a hack saw or dremel. It's okay if you end up cutting a small bit onto the barrel. Then take a piler and twist it off. You can also add a relief cut down the part you are removing. Not that hard. Threading is easy if you have the tool. I rented mine out a few times before selling it.
