Broken AR-15 Bolt

Has anyone ever seen anything like this?

It is a Fail Zero BCG, with maybe 1000 round on it. I usually give the BCG a good cleaning every 250 to 500 rounds, and spray it down with a little dry lube. I use the same routine on my other ARs and have no issues.

The only thing I could find that looked out of place was a lot of carbon build up inside the BCG.

Could that have caused the bolt to stick or not rotate properly? If so, would the force of firing send the BCG back with enough force to break the still locked in place bolt?

WOW! 1000 rounds is nothing! Definetly defective bolt... I think so.

Fail zero failed. I expected a failed ejector or something or a lug not that massive of a break.

What's with the green crud on the firing pin shaft visible through the cam opening. That BCG doesn't look like its ever been cleaned.

I've seen this happen to Fail-zero bolts more than once. I don't buy their crap.

Buy a known good quality part next time.

it looks like it may have had prior weakness's look at the rust on the lug where it broke apart that's not a good sign, and possibly points to cracking before it every came apart

Common place for a bolt to break, that is where the metal is thinnest and weakest. That concerns me a little, hopefully their QC hasn't gotten down. I've had mine for over a year, a few thousand rounds with very little lube, a few wipedowns but no cleaning and it hasn't malfunctioned yet.

Have you contacted Fail Zero?

Try taking a file to the bolt, see how well it cuts the metal. If it's like filing glass, the heat treat left it too hard and brittle. That kind of stuff happens, something gets left in a little too long.

The lug shear I can see happening but there is something fishy with the rear section of the bolt. I'd be willing to bet it seized in place and the cam pin could not rotate the bolt and it seared.
The comment on dry lube has me thinking it's a lubrication issue.
I've always wondered where people get off thinking they know more then the military armors. You an approved lube on your AR. Clean and lube it after every trip to the range.
And don't waste your money on Tacicool crap dry lube. Good old gun oil, CLP, or grease in the right application is all that is ever needed. All this wonder lube, Positively charged molecules, wear inhibitors Yada Yada Yada... is BS. I'd go as far as to say if you want something fancy get some synthetic based gun oil. Other then that leave the snake oil to the snakes.

When you get the new one you can Cerakote everything as it is proven itself in dry applications when all parts are Cerakoted
