A buddy and I took a class by one of the instructors, Bob Chavez, at Front Sight...it was for the AR-15. Very informative, very well taught by Bob. Wished I could schedule myself out from work to take some classes up at the Lassen Community College.

Yeah it isn't on there, you have to go here to their searchable database on the community college site:

login as a 'Guest', select gunsmithing from the pulldown menu and search during 'Spring 2008'.

Can they teach a course at a SoCal JC?

Any chance an instructor could teach a course at a southern california junior college?

I would be willing to pay more - maybe even $25 or $30.

Bob Chavez is the man, used to play poker with him quite a bit when I was a student in the gunsmithing program there.

I've been thinking about making my way up there for a summer refresher class or two, I'm thinking the M1 Garand (and M1A) class would be nice, and I definitely need a refresher in wood work, specifically refinishing. Wouldn't mind the engraving class either.

To the best of my knowledge no there are no classes in socal. With these week long classes people come from all over the state to take them. Also theres plenty of fishing hiking and other outdoor activities to do there.

Don't go hiking by your self up in lassen, at least not armed. I've been stalked by moutnain lions up there, luckily saw it before it got into dangerous range.

OK digging up a thread - Lassen has a "Certificate of Completion - Pistolsmith" that's 17 units. Now I've been out of school for way, way too long - is 17 units a single semester? Two? I'm kinda wondering if I could manage to take a sort of sabbatical and live off of savings or find some random job up there for a year...

See page 34 of this PDF:

Courses themselves PDF (look around page 30):

Just thoughts running through the noggin, but it sure would be cool.

Yeah, 17 units is one semester. The program works on a one unit per week setup. And unless something has changed, your not just working on pistols in that time, I think there are about 3 or 4 weeks on shotguns in there as well.

OK, cool - so at "1 unit per week" would a guy be able to hold down some sort of trivial job to bring in a little cash? (who knows what the job would be) I definitely did when I was actually in college, but I was way younger with a lot more willingness to not sleep so much.

Susanville is pretty spartan on the job market, it's pretty much just walmart and the prisons with a few locally owned businesses in between. And the school is also full time, by state law it takes something like 35 hours of classtime to get one college credit, so to do that in one week they do classes 8am-5pm and continue to 8pm to give the students time to work on their own projects or catch up, you get an hour and a half for lunch. Monday through friday goes like that.
