First, a bit of background. I have a mosin with a bad counterbore job, it shoots like crap. When deciding what to do with it my first thought was cut the barrel to 16", add a huge muzzle brake, and call it a day. However, I decided it would be a good project for me to try my hand at a little garage gunsmithing first, if I screw up bad I can always turn it into a range-trolling device at a later date.
What I want is a 200yd hog gun that keeps as much of an "authentic" look as possible. Currently, I'm cutting the barrel to 16.5". My issue is that I want to do something with the sights and also allow for a bayonet attachment. My current thought is cutting up an AKM gas block and FSB, welding them together, turning the barrel down a bit, and adding an AK-74 style brake allowing me to attach an AKM bayonet.
My issue is figuring out what to do for a rear sight, I'd like to add an apeture rear sight somewhere on the receiver. This is where I need input, since my only current idea is a hackabilly job using JB weld to build up a base that I can dril and tap for an apeture and have it sit flush. I'm sure someone has better ideas and I'd love to hear them. I'd like to keep the project cheap though seeing as I only have about $100 into the rifle.
