AR10 front flip up site help

I feel stupid asking actually but to be honest, I know nothing about AR's. I have a Bushmaster in .308 that I want to mount a flip up front sight to. This one only has a rail and no front sight. From the tiny amount of reading I've done I think I have to change out the gas block to one with a rail??? Anyone willing to help me with this and point me in the right direction for the parts I need? I can financially help with this or help with AK building. Stupid kinda, I have built probably 70+ Ak's and own.... Lets say just a few and only have 2 AR rifles. I'm located in Visalia. *blushes with embarrassment*

You can go a couple of different routes. It should take a .750 gas block, then you can mount a front sight to that.

Or you can get a new free float handguard that goes past the gas block already on there and mount a sight on that.

I'm down for the free float, 16" barrel, pointe in the right direction for one. And yes (stupid I'm sure) will need assistance installing it. Yes, I AM that AR dumb.

Or you could go with something like this:

Sometimes I wonder why I even bother. Some people are just incapable of understanding the simplest of things.

The Troy TRX handguards are great quality and very light.

You'll have to drill out the rivet to remove the sling swivel and the bayonet lug will probably have to be trimmed down a little bit to fit. I'd help if I was closer, but I'm sure someone up that way will be willing to help.

Be careful with the gas block route. Most rail mounted sights are not designed to mount to the lower elevation of the gas block. The gas block rail needs to be level with the upper rail for most sights to work properly.

A taller gas block and rail is needed or a full float tube with rail.

You are correct that a lot of sights are designed to be mounted on the same plane as the rear sight. But there are quite a few that are designed to be mounted on the shorter gas blocks. YHM, Midwest Ind., GG&G and Diamondhead are just a few off the top of my head.

atsaubrey, if you've built AK's, you'll have no problem assembling an AR. All you'd need is a barrel vise or receiver block, a punch, hammer, torque wrench and an AR15 armorer's wrench. Also a grinder or dremel to grind down the bayonet lug and sling swivel posts.

Here's the installation instructions for the handguard (you can skip step #4):

But if you still think you'd be more comfortable with someone helping you the first time, you should start a post in the Centerfire Rifles section. You'll probably get more responses there and maybe someone who lives close to you can lend a hand.

I would definately feel more comfortable with help, I just don't have a lot of interest in the AR platform and haven't read a whole lot. Lol

Nothing wrong with that. If you were closer, I'd be more then happy to help you out. Like I said, post in the Centerfire Rifles section. I think you'll have better luck there.
