    Removing A2 Front Sight

I want to remove my A2 style front sight on my Colt AR but have no idea how this is done. I want to put on a folding front sight. Any advice? Products I need/should look at?

There should be 2 pins you drive out (they are taper pins). Drive out from the small side.
You'll need to remove your muzzle device to slide on and off.
A.R.M.S makes a folding front sight that looks like the reg. A2 sight its about $150.
I think Yankee Hill Machine (YHM) makes a screw on type (no taper pins). I dont recall how much they run for but maybe similar.

Is this something I could do or should I just take it to a gunsmith?

Its pretty easy. AS long as you have a punch and hammer and (maybe an AR Wrench/Tool for the muzzle device) but it can all be done with simple house tools.
There are some walk through videos on YouTube also.
I forgot to mention there is a pin in the gas block that holds the gas tube to the gas block which would need to be removed and reinstalled onto the new gas block of your choice.

I've thought about going to a receiver height railed gas block in the future. What about gas tube alignment? Is that not an issue when just changing out the gas block?

As long as your gas tube is lined up staight (left to right)there should be no issue (the gas tube goes through a hole in the reciever and it sits on the notch on the barrel nut, under the delta ring)
As far as height (up and down) I think most gas blocks are within the same tolerances.
Make sure there are no debris or any dents/ bends in the gas tube. If they are, replace it. Its a cheap part but the heart of the rifle.
the gas tube also has a natural bend to it towards the middle of it almost.

Im going to go and tinker with it today, I might just end up taking it to a gunsmith to have it done properly

The harder you hit it, the easier it'll go!
Couldn't resist, just an old phrase from my Ironworking days.

A big vise, big hammer, and a big starting punch, will make life much easier with these.

If you want to DIY it's not too difficult. If you dont have the tools and wherewithall, take it to a pro and pay the nominal fee.

Gas tube will line up. You're not moving the barrel nut, so it will go right back in.

It is simple to do. I use a punch and a hammer. Only takes a couple of whacks. They are tapered so be sure which way you are driving it.

What are you planning to do with the A2 sight once it is off? hint, hint.

Brownells sells a block specifically for removing an A2 sight. The issue is locking down the barrel (or sight) so you can know the pins out (usually from left to right - small to larger opening).

I did mine by locking the uppper into a vice with a receiver block and then tapping the pins out. Piece of cake. Took all of 5 minutes.
