    Installing a brake

I'm in the process of going featureless to take advantage of my pre ban mags. I picked up a Troy Claymore brake from my lgs and am in the process of installing it. It is supposed to be installed so that the logo is facing up. It starts to get right about 3/4 of a turn before the logo and I don't see how I'm supposed to get the logo facing up. Is there a specific torque I can use to make sure it is on tight enough since I'm not gonna be able to get it on how they describe.

Two ways to index a muzzle device: Crush washer or Peel washers. Crush washers are usually aluminum and will "crush" as you tighten them to where you need them. Peel washers are a washer made up of many thin pieces of metal. If the device is not clocked right, you can peel a few layers off to make the washer thinner untill you can clock your brake where you want it.

Well I used a crush washer and it is on there really tight but the logo is on the side as opposed to on the top.

        I use a barrel vise.
if you only have a 1/4 turn to get the brake in the correct position, you can try and lay it on its side on the floor with a towel underneath. And put both knees on the rifle and you might be able to get the washer to crush a little more.
it sometimes works, but a barrel vise works great.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.

It's like a full 3/4 turn to get there. I'll try to do the towel trick, is there such a thing as too tight?

Yes there is a such thing as to tight. I would not go over 50 ft/lbs

Where are you located. As I can shave a little off the brake to get it to index.

I'm in Beaumont. It's a kind of weird design. On the sides that aren't flat on one side it says Troy, and the opposite side says "front toward enemy"or whatever it says on a Claymore and it has an arrow. If I install it how they say to then the "front toward enemy"side would face down. I'll get a picture of how it is now, which makes more sense than what they're saying.

              here is the instructions: http://troyind.com/manuals/TMIM_Clay...56_4-23-12.pdf

3/4 of a full turn may be too much. Dont force it.

Yeah, it came with a new one. It's on there good as is, I don't want to try another 3/4 of a turn. I'll see if I can get a hold of a torque wrench tomorrow and see where I'm at. I'd prefer it the way it is.

Have you tried to install minus the crush washer? Sometime it will clock just right with zero washers.

No I didn't try that. I figured it was required.

I know that indexing is required when there are vertical holes directing gases out if the brake but this brake has only holes in the end that are horizontal, do wouldn't the indexing be irrelevant?

so a muzzle brake and threaded barrel are not evil features ?? forgive me if this is a dumb ? but im a little confused
Laws that forbid the carrying of arms... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man. Jefferson's "Commonplace Book," 1774_1776, quoting from On Crimes and Punishment, by criminologist Cesare Beccaria, 1764

A flash hider is an evil feature. A muzzle brake is a part from a sporting rifle. Threaded barrel don't matter either.

But something has got me concerned though. Is this in a pistol because that barrel looks short based on the front sight location.
And if it is an AR pistol. There is no such thing as going featureless Once it has a detachable mag outside the pistol grip it's an illegal weapon. It must have a mag lock.
