I need some help headspacing an IMI made Galil 556 barrel on an ORF receiver. Can someone provide some insight on how to do this? I am just basing it on how the barrle looks in my AK, but I dont know if that is sufficient.

Need help headspacing Galil

That is far from sufficient. What you need is a set of head space gages. Then you would check it as usual and make adjustments as needed. I believe the headspace on a galil is with the use of a pull through reamer. But I could be wrong.Last edited by kcstott; 08-12-2012, 12:05 PM. -
Thanks guys. My barrel looks like this:

The extractor cut is a bit out of turn. It looks like I might need a shim for the barrel or something. Wont know until i get some help with the GO/NOGO gauges. About timing the barrel, can you explain a bit more on it Yemff?I'd rather be at the range!

Go to Arizona Response Systems website. Go to "notes" then click "ak notes" and look for the Galil info. You'll need a lathe to make your job as easy as possible. Get some feeler guages along with your headspace guages, shim stock starting at .005", and IIRC you'll need a 20mm crows foot for your torque wrench and something to keep the receiver from moving when applying the torque. There are 3 kinds of people in this world.
The wise, learn from the mistakes of others.
The smart, learn from their own mistakes.
The others, well......they just never learn.

Quick headspace gauge question. Are headspace gauges specific only to a cartridge, like 5.56x45mm? Or are they specific to a particular weapon, like a Galil chambered in 5.56x45mm?
In other words, if you had gauges that you used to headspace your AR-15, could you use the same gauges to check headspace on your Galil? Or would you need to buy a different set of gauges for your Galil?Comment

They are cartridge specific. The same gauges will work in any firearm the same caliber.sigpicOriginally posted by Dr. ElkyIf your a man who wears white sunglasses, your probably a douche bagOriginally posted by CSACANNONEERI've been know to cross dress and go the other way at certain events.Comment

And some gages interchange between a few calibers
A 30-06 would handle any .30-06 based chamber like the .25-06, .270 Win, .30-06, 8mm-06, .338-06 and .35 Whelen.
Belted Magnums require one gage for all cartridges.
And a few others interchange as well.Last edited by kcstott; 08-12-2012, 12:20 PM.Comment

Are you sure about the 6.5x55 swede being on that list?(where's that raised eyebrow smiley?)sigpicOriginally posted by Dr. ElkyIf your a man who wears white sunglasses, your probably a douche bagOriginally posted by CSACANNONEERI've been know to cross dress and go the other way at certain events.Comment

Ya know that's probably a typo from Brownells I have to admit I copied and pasted it being lazy.
The difference between a 6.5mm and an 06 is about .150" on the headspace dimension so yeah a 30-06 gage is incorrect and a typo on brownells part. Good catch I didn't notice it.Last edited by kcstott; 08-12-2012, 12:30 PM.Comment

If I wasn't a reloader and swedish rifle fanboi I probably wouldn't have batted an eye, but I had to check....yeah not so much.

I can only assume it was a typo that should have been 6.5-06.
...eh.
