Getting out of gunsmithing - lathe available

OK, I posted a question a couple of weeks ago about potential interest in a South Bend Heavy 10 lathe and got a few messages of interest. I finally got it cleaned up and some pictures are now available. They are posted on Photobucket here: www.photobucket.com\dougs_lathe

Here is a list of what comes with the package:

South Bend Heavy 10 toolroom lathe (4 1/2 ft bed, 36" between centers, 1 3/8" bore through spindle, threaded nose, 1 hp three phase motor)
    Taper attachment
    Cushman 3 jaw chuck
    Skinner 4 jaw chuck
    South Bend follow rest
    Aftermarket steady rest
    South Bend micrometer carriage stop
5C collet closer (handwheel type, nose piece, thread protector)
South Bend collet rack and stand
    Miscellaneous 5C collets (some Hardinge)
KDK-100 quick change tool holder + 3 holders OR
Aloris BXA quick change tool holder + 5 holders (need to remachine t-nut)
Assorted tool bits (HSS and carbide)
    Boring bar set
Hitachi single phase to 3 phase VFD
    Spindle spider
South Bend lathe milling attachment (hard to find)
    Drilled/slotted face plate
    Lathe dog drive plate
    Assorted lathe dogs
    Live centers, dead centers
    Jacobs chuck tailpiece

The VFD needs 20 amp, 240 VAC single phase power (smaller than an electric dryer connection). The crossfeed screw was completely worn out (.090 backlash!), so that was replaced. Belts are also new. I think this machine was mainly used for facing as there really wasn't any other significant wear on it. Someone did a really crappy repaint job on it at some point (cleaning solvent softens the paint!), but that doesn't interfere with the operation.

I don't know how much a setup like this should be priced at. I put it together a piece at a time (lathe and taper attachment came as a unit), so I costed out the individual items based on current ebay prices (I don't know how realistic that is) and the whole kit came out around $5500 (I can send the spreadsheet, not sure how to attach it here). I want to sell it as a package, and I'm a reasonable man (especially to Calgunner gunsmiths), so if you're interested let's discuss. I'm asking around $3250 for the whole setup. If that is out of your budget range, I can pull out the high dollar accessories (like the milling attachment and collet closer).

I live in Boulder Creek, about 15 miles north of Santa Cruz. If you're serious, you are welcome to stop by and try it out. This would be a great gunsmithing setup (the milling tool will allow you to do small jobs, like cutting sight dovetails in slides, etc) and it comes with just about everything you need to get going. I like using it, but I don't have the time to take gunsmithing from the infrequent hobby to the "make ends meet" stage that would justify keeping this machine. It deserves better (and I don't want it to go to some guy who is just going to part it out on ebay). If you want more pictures, just let me know.

I also have a Baldor diamond wheel grinder (for carbide tool bits) available separately.

To the moderator: if this is not where this post is allowed. please let me know the appropriate location and I'll gladly move it.

I was trying to sell a very similar set up earlier this year and was only able to get $1400. And I had to hold out for that.
I think I would price yours with the quality tooling at around $3500-$4000 and let them talk me down from there.

            You're such a Romantic!
Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...
