    Custom Ruger 22/45

Hey Fellow Calgunners. I wanted to share my Ruger 22/45 ongoing project.
I started with your standard 22/45 picked up at turners for $279.

I decided it is one of my favorite plinkers, but I could't leave well enough alone and wanted to do some tinkering beyond the magazine disconnect mod.
So I brought out my trusty dremel to start doing irreversible damage to my frame in hopes of pulling off the popular 1911 grip mod.

With the molded plastic grips ground off it was time to make use of some of the tools at work to drill the holes for the 1911 grip screw bushings

with the scriest parts out of the way I felt pretty good with the new grips mocked up.

I have a few more tricks up my sleeve for this guy before it's time for reassembly so stay tuned for more.

Also, Mods I'm unsure if this is the right place for this post so please relocate if necessary.

    Ingenious! Nice Job.

    I remember when I bought a 22/45 for $180...
The grip was too skinny for my hands. I put a Hogue Slipover Grip, but it slipped too much! Sold the pistol....
I have 2 MK II's with oversize grips & love them.

& treat that drill press table with a little steel wool & Naval Jelly, will ya?
Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...

I belong to the group that uses firearms, and knows which bathroom to use.

Tis better to have Trolled & lost, Than to never have Trolled, at all.

Yeah Bruce I agree that table could use a bit of love, but unfortunately I'm just the IT guy borrowing the fab shop after hours

Minor update time. Since the frame of the ruger is plastic and not metal like the 1911 I mixed up a little JB Weld to apply to the bushings and used C-clamps to hold them into place

While those begin to sit over night I busted out the dremel once more and took to shaping the 1911 grips. Since the Ruger utilizes a difference bolt release than the 1911 and cannot be sling-shot (slung-shot) without disallowing my mags to fall free (mag disconnect mod via bushing replacement. I use the dremel to cut and shape an area for the bolt release lever to be activated. I also shaped the rear corners of the grips to better match the lines of the Ruger. While they look uneven in the photo I assure you they are since I clamped them back to back and shaped both grips at once.

All right folks that's it for now and since tomorrow is Sunday there is no chance of receiving anymore goodies for this build until monday at the earliest so stay tuned.

That's cool you can use the shop at work, no mess to make at home.

I have a shop at work & home. There are some things I would like to do at work, but being 25 miles from home, it isn't convenient on the weekends. And the testing facility is 2.5 miles from home.

So how did you come up with the idea to mod this pistol? Were your hands too big? Or just wanted to build a better mousetrap?

Primarily a better mouse trap I do have larger hands and the 1911 grip is more comfortable. I wasn't the first person to do the grip mod as there are tutorials all over the net, but this little plinker is a ways from done. She's getting all brand new volquartsen guts as well as a few other bells and whistles I'm going to keep up my sleeve for the time being.
