    re-crowning a barrel

re-crowning a barrel with shallow rifling often causes chatter. How can i prevent this, and what usually causes it?

If you're using a lathe, slow down the speed and try a cutter with an odd number of cutting teeth. Use PLENTY of lubrication. I prefer and hand-driven reamer. Indicate concentricity on the id of the barrel after your chuck it; if your measurement is not uniform, try a 4-jaw chuck...sometimes the bore is not concentric to the barrel od. Leave as little of the business end of the barrel protruding from the chuck as you can get by with.

True wealth is time. Time to enjoy life.

Life's journey is not to arrive safely in a well preserved body, but rather to slide in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "holy schit...what a ride"!!

Custom grind a single point cutter with lots of relief.
      Shallow cuts at high speed.
