    Takedown Detent Spring

Hey everyone. I was wondering if any gunshops in San Diego sell the takedown detent spring. I am building my OLL and ended up bending and breaking the spring putting my CAA 6 position stock on, any help is appreciated.

    Thanks,
    David
Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes...Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.

As a last resort, you can always get it direct from Stag.

True.. I was hoping somewhere in SD would have them, since it would probably cost more for shipping then the spring.. I may need to buy a few just in case.

You could order one of these:

Bushmaster Firearms International based in Carson City, Nevada, United States, is an American manufacturer and distributor of firearms. The company's product line revolves around semi-automatic pistol and rifle variants of the M4 / AR-15 design. Now made with 100% US materials and parts.

It's the "Lost Parts" kit - the most commonly lost (sprung accoss the room) parts. Always good to have a few spares.

I've tapped a few of my lowers and use 1/4 inch ss setscrews to secure cutdown springs rather than chase them around every time I swap furniture.

I think the ARFCOM guys came up with the idea. So far, so good.

1/4 inch? Don't you meant something more along the lines of 4-40?

Oops, sorry. I should have been paying attention to what I said instead of what I meant.

The set screws are 4-40, a quarter inch long. When I'm putting steel into aluminum I try to give it as much gripping area as possible to reduce the load on the relatively fragile aluminum threads. I really don't want to strip out a hole in my lower.

Anyway it goes like this. Get a 4-40 tap, a 1/4 inch 4-40 setscrew, a ruler and some blue loctite.

Put some tape on the tap leaving 1/4 inch of the business end showing. Oil it up and tap (slowly and carefully, no drill!!!!) the detent pin hole on the rear of the receiver 1/4 inch deep. Stop when you get to the tape. Clean out the hole thoroughly.

Take the detent spring and measure 1/4 inch from one end. Cut it off. This is now the right length for the modified hole.

Assemble the detent, spring and pin assembly and carefully thread the setscrew in until it is even or slightly lower than the surface of the receiver. Check to see if the pin is held securely and that there isn't any slop or anything obviously wrong.

When you're happy with the results go ahead and loctite the setscrew.

No more chasing that damn spring......

My only thought is that you don't need LT since the retaining plate is going to prevent the set screw from unscrewing.

                          MUCH longer than necessary.
I use regular 1/8" long 4-40's for this.
Remember that the setscrew is not really doing anything when the stock is installed if you install the setscrew flush to the rear face of the receiver.
