    PSL Barrels?

I'm looking for a barrel for a Romanian PSL, but they seem pretty hard to find. Does anyone out there know where I can find one? If not, does anyone have any ideas of something else I can do, like a good substitute?
    Thanks.

To the new member, Welcome! Search is your friend.

To ElvenSoul, how quickly a recent thread is laid to rest, only to be started up again anew with total loss of continuity.

Actually Richard,it doesn't hurt to keep asking once in a while.Prexis is currently offering PSL barrels for $200 shipped. He put 10 up on weapons guild as a feeler,to gauge interest. They are 1/11 twist ratio. He offers original taper/or custom at no extra charge.Extractor cut out and gas port,as well as barel threads are completed. No chrome lined barrel offering yet. This is a good beginning for PSL owners.I'm sure more will come. http://www.weaponsguild.com/forum/in...?topic=31788.0

The thread isn't quite cold - it's just a couple weeks old.

Jestism (Prexis) is making barrels from the 7 or so 1:11 twist blanks he had in the profile of your choice, of which fewer than 5 are left at last count. Holescreek mentioned that in the thread. Don't count on a whole lot more, it's a niche market to be sure and the blanks he is using are all there is of this type.

The twist he is using also got some attention because the standard fare is 1:9.45" or 1:10". For light ball, while still debatable, there is some information which suggests the slower twist performs slightly better with lead/steel core bullets up to 1.76" in length (e.g. ordinary light ball rounds, which is what most people feed their PSLs).

When those blanks are gone, he might be compelled to make more with more commonly available blanks if demand remains high. I suppose you can't have your cake and eat it too, so while you can get a heavier profile to suit a hankering for a PSL HB, you won't be able to get slower twists like the original rifles were fitted with without paying the big bucks for a custom cut blank at $360-$420 a pop plus the cost of cutting to length, chambering, threading, gas port and extractor cutout.

Don't worry about chrome - overrated. If you clean your PSL after use, corrosive primed light ball won't be an issue, especially for those of us living in this land of near eternal summer with 10% avg humidity.

If you are particularly worried, Roccobro can get your barrel molten salt nitrocarburized (Melonite/Isonite QPQ process) which gives you all the same qualities inside and outside of the barrel. It will even treat the gas port if it's already cut (and by rights, it should be, it's going to be harder than a mill file on the surface when it comes back). A batch of as few as 12 or as many as 36 barrels goes out for treatment every couple of months. I think you'll find the price quite reasonable.

Thanks guys. How can I get a hold of this Prexis? I've never used weaponsguild and it's telling me that I need to log in to follow that link.

You need to become a member of Weapons Guild.I wouldn't wait long.I saw that recently the barrel maker was indicating that the $200 shipped price was for WG members only. Was thinking about charging non-members $225.

Join Weaponsguild ("builders helping builders" is their moto, it is going to come up during registration). The PSL barrel fabber is Jestism. PM him at "Jestism" to start the ball rolling on one of the last barrel blanks he has left.

I doubt they will be the 1:11" given total lack of readily available blanks in that twist. For most folks, the common 1:10" and 1:9.5" are probably good enough. On the plus side Jestism is reported to do a bang up job on the chambering and profiles, so these should prove to be very good, especially for the money. Only someone with a CNC could afford to do what he is offering. Done manually there is a lot of operator time involved.

Mike told me that his 1:11" blanks are custom made and he shouldn't have any problem getting more, they will just take time to be produced. His first order was around 20 barrel blanks if I am interpreting the various posts correctly. At some point he will need to jack up the price to start paying on his new equipment. The same blanks are being used on the DPM barrels and they are $250 each and a bit less work IMO.

Too bad we don't know where he is sourcing his blanks from, but that's his little secret. If his lead times are any better than the 4-6 months I kept hearing for anything other than a 1:10" twist, then he's got the best deal going assuming they are at least Green Mountain/ER Shaw level quality blanks. If they aren't up to your high standard, plan B is a 1:10" twist from Shilen, though as my update indicated, the true match grade blanks from Shilen are about twice the price of the original $165 figure I indicated, putting them on par with the other top 5 match-grade folks.
