problem with Rem 700

Hey guys, I have a Remington 700 in 308. I've had it for about 5 years, never had issues with it. Lately I've had a failure of the firing pin to be cocked back when I extract the previous round. So, when I extract the round and chamber another, there is no click or anything. This happens randomly not every time. I have a Rifle Basix trigger on it, been on the rifle for 4 years. Recently put the barreled action in a XLR chassis. I don't think it is the chassis though, because the problem started when it was in the previous stock. Any ideas on what the problem could be?

The trigger is out of adjustment. Call Rifle Basix and they will tell you how to adjust it.

The trigger might also be dirty. Try taking the rifle out of the stock and spraying some lighter fluid through the trigger.

You should also check the adjustment too, for safety.

The lighter fluid will remove most "gunk", and when it evaporates it will leave a light film that will lubricate the trigger, at least in theory.

However, I'd suggest you have a qualified smith look at the trigger, as clearly the sear is not resetting. It's probably the result of an improperly set up trigger, and could lead to a negligent discharge.

Lighter fluid (naptha) will work to clean, so will camp fuel (white gas) as made by Coleman. I personally use a spray can of electrical contact cleaner. However, none of these products have any lubrcating qualities.

If, after cleaning you still experience problems, get the trigger checked out. Good luck.

Lubing a Remington trigger with CLP or anything similar is an incredibly terrible idea. The design of the Remington 700 basically creates a funnel that channels all sorts of crap into the top of the trigger. By lubing the trigger, you guarantee that all of that crap stays in the trigger, gumming it up.

Eventually the sear will fail to reset properly, and you are left with a dangerous trigger.

I have two M700's and have never had a problem with lightly lubricating the triggers of either. That said, I didn't mean to step on anyone's toes, so I'll withdraw my remarks as to lubing the trigger and defer to the experts among us.

Im in Moreno Valley. Thanks for the help, but I think it is okay now. I used some compressed air and blew it out, cycled some dummy rounds about 100 times and its working fine. Hope it stays that way.

As I mentioned, they get out of adjustment with use. My Riflebasix trigger has done that to me. Clean it out, call rifle basix (because that is the only way they will give you adjusting instruction) and get it set properly.
