    AK pistol FTE problem

So I finally got around to shooting the AK pistol I built last year and its just a little under gassed. The bolt carrier isnt going all the way back 1 out of 5 times which causes the spent round to not make it all the way out of the ejection port before the carrier closes on it.my gas port hole was 1/8". Do I need to open it up more or can I play with the spring rate of the reciol spring? The reason I ask is the muzzle device is welded to the front sight/gas block so it would be a bit of a pain to remove. Thanks.

How do know the carrier is not going all the back?

A short ejector is another common cause.

could be one or a combination of problems. The gas port would be my first guess. Followed by short ejector and new gun frictionitis. Don't start messing around with the recoil spring. It'll probably just start causing failure to feed issues.

Give us more details. What is your barrel length? How far is the gas port from the muzzle? what style gas block are you using? Any binding or drag on the bolt/carrier when run without the recoil spring?...got pics?

Here's the gun and it's specs...

It's not the ejector, I've built several AK's and they have all been on AK builders stuff, I only trim it just enough for the bolt to pass by. I can also tell it's not going all the way back because when it fails to eject it also does not strip the next round. As you can see in the pics the gas port is very near the end of the barrel so it doesnt have much time to bleed gas before the bullet is out of the barrel.

More armed citizens = Quicker response times, less victims.

Guns should only be surrendered one bullet at a time.

First thing I'd check Based on the pic is how far into the gas block is the piston sitting?
                Then as toes suggested Frictionitis.

Now Not being all the familiar with location of gas ports in relation to the muzzle, yours looks a little close to the muzzle it might not have enough gas to drive the carrier back.

But I will leave that up to the more experienced as I have a grand total of two AK's under my belt and only one of which is a pistol.

                Toes That's your Que.

Although I do like the quote
Disclaimer : This pistol WAS built as a single shot, and was later converted to magazine fed semi auto so sit on it DOJ!

I've had to state the same crap but my statement was not as colorful as that.

Very cool little pistol. Nice work. Given that you have a standard size gas port and zero dwell time afterwards you're going to have to open up that port to tap more gas.

Did you drill your port through the gas block at a 45 deg. angle? If so you can just chase the hole with the largest size bit that will fit through the existing hole in the GB. Should be a #21 or #22 I think. You just don't want to enlarge the port in the gas block itself. If that's not possible or isn't enough you'll have to pull everything back off and open it up.

For those that don't have a weapons guild acct. The recommended size is 13/64. I've read the same advice from slamfire51.

The piston is fully seated in the gas block...

Unfortunatly the gas port is drilled at 90 degrees. The gas port wound up falling right where a pin channel was that I had welded up and turned back down. Somehow in that process the barrel turned into titanium and no drill would touch it at 45 degrees. Even after removing the gas block I ruined several hss bits and three cobalt bits before I stepped up to carbide. Guess a 13/64 carbide bit is in my future...
