    remove rust with water/battery

When I was a boy, I read a book that had all kinds of little home repair/ auto repair tips.

I seemed to remember one that involved using a car battey, a couple of steel rods (like sanded coat hangers) as electrodes, and a bucket of water to remove rust from objects.

Have any of you heard of, know of, or used such a method? I would appreciate any direction you could offer.

Umm.. I believe that's a formula to CREATE rust.

I know you can make your own electric bore cleaner with a 12 volt battery, some wire, plumbing tape, metal rods and an amonia/vinigar/ water mix. Worked great for me. Different principals though. Did remove lots of rust from the barrel also.

I rigged up a bore cleaner with ammonia, a steel rod and a couple of 'D' batteries and that worked great. I don't think water will do the job though.

Like I said, I was just a kid so Im sure I had it wrong.

I guess it was amonia, not water... or a mixture thereof.

Is the bore cleaning method intended to clean out fouling, or rust?

I'll do some Thread Fu to find a model I can use and some instructions. How long did it take to clean out the barrel? Was is heavily rusted, or just a little?

I havn't seen it done but I have heard of this process. A friend of mine builds chopper bicycles and he told me about how he placed a bike part connected to a battery and placed it in the bucket of water and the other polarity connected to a railroad tie nail placed in the water as well... he said the rust transfers to the nail...not sure what gets connected to negative and whats connected to positive.

I have seen it donw with a battery charger, bucket of water and baking soda (I think), I remember you attached part of the battery charger to the rusty part.

I think you can also use a bucket of molassas and no battery.

Battery charger, baking soda, and water is correct but be careful the by product if memory serves me correctly is hydrogen. Definitely a job to be done in a well ventilated area. Good luck!
