Don't want to do a scout sniper arrangement? You can get a decent 3-9x bushnell that will work great in that setup. You can do that setup for around $100.

Scope forward is actually done for a reason. The rear ring on a mosin is open so no means of mounting a conventional scope base to it.

If you have the base I can do it though.

Can you post some links of the parts I would need? And the scout scope you are talking about? I am in the same situation. Actually myself and 2 other of my friends just bought Mosins. And we all want scopes. But we do not know how and where to start. And advice would be much appreciated.

                Again that would be me.

You need a kit like this.
                Mosin mount kit

and $100 that includes cutting the bolt handle and drilling and taping the receiver.

Not to take away from the mounting further up the barrel and changing the handle but some folks like to leave the mosin in factory condition or at least the ability to be restored back. I figured I should share some info and links:

The biggest reason to run a scout scope setup is for faster actuation of the target. You can use both eyes and as the scope is further down the barrel it makes lining up targets very quick.

On the Mosin rear sight comes off with two pins and reveals a 3/8 inch dovetail which provides the most solid surface for a scout mount. Here is the best mount I have found to convert that into a weaver:

It has a full clamp and a locking screw at the top to make sure it stays firm in place. Make sure you use lock tight!

You can now select a long eye relief scope to match up. This is basically a pistol scope or light rifle scope. Here are some choices:

Here is a video giving an overview of the scout setup:

Would like to help but not open until July. There is side scope mounts that you can use to mount a scope in the standard position as other hunting rifles and the bolt handle will need to be a bent down type.

In fact if you look up the Mosin Nagant 91/30 PU it was the Russian sniper rifle used in WW2 by the Russians with a side scope mount and bent bolt handle.

While a scout scope has advantages it is not really that good for long distance shooting. The flip to that though even though the scope mounted with a side mount is better for long range shooting, a standard 91/30 will not have the accuracy to take advantage of that type of setup.

Either setup work but you will need to invest more time and money to get a sub MOA rifle for long range shooting.
