AK Barrel Replacement

I used the recommended socket extension and had to whack it pretty hard to get it out. It was pressed in hard because it had a too- large diameter. The new barrel is a Romanian import and the correct size for the trunnion. Note to self: get the good barrel first. I paid $60 for the US made one from I forget where. The Romy was $100. Thx again for the support guys, I'm feeling good about this. I'll Update when I get the new one in.

Saw the tread to late. I would have been happy to help you push out the barrel with the correct tool.

The difference between a good normal press fit and a OMFG that tight press could be as little as a half a thousandth of an inch.

The few barrels that I have done for people, I mic it first then correct the barrel so it has about .0005"-.001" press fit. That is plenty tight enough with a 7mm pin holding everything locked in place. and you can get it out later with little headache. Now I understand that not everyone has the correct tool to do this. But that's the way I set up the barrels I do. I also sand out the front trunnion lightly to remove any burrs or defects before pressing in a barrel. The drag mark in the trunnion will cause the press to be near double the effort. Oh and use just a touch of oil on the barrel when you press it in place. Don't use Anti seize that crap will creep out when you are trying to Parkerize and will ruin your hard work at the last step.

Thanks for the tips. As I go I might have a few more questions. This is my "Junkyard Dog" AK as I have two others that are a bit cleaner: an AMD 65 and a Romy that I built at the LA County BP last year. The BP gun is really nice due to the professional support that donate their time to making the dreams of others come true. If you haven't attended one, you absolutely have to. Meanwhile, I like this gun because I built it at home. I'm hoping the new barrel solves the key holing problem.
