    Tantal Build Questions

I'm planning a Tantal (Kbk wz. 1988) build and want to confirm some of my information before I proceed. Much of the rifle is reported as garden variety AK74, but a few parts (buttstock and FSB) are visibly different.

I obtained a gas block, front sight base and trunnion from Apex, but could not find a Tantal rear sight base for a reasonable price. I have a spare AK74 RSB. Could an AK74 RSB be used instead?

Unlike the AK74, where the FSB is not threaded for a muzzle device the Tantal barrel threading is 14x1 LH, like a standard AKM. Still looking for a Tantal style brake to fit. I have a spare AK74 bolt group, I assume this is interchangeable based on what I've read, but would like that verified. AK-Builder sells the flats, already bought the rivets on Apex order. Now there is just a barrel.

I'm leaning towards using an intermediate or NATO length AK74 synthetic fixed stock. The (expensive) folding wire stock (basically a copy of the MPi-KMS-72) is a bit short for my tastes and I'd have to pin it open anyway. If I can get one for less than $60 I might add an elevated cheek piece on a wire riser welded on and add a spacer to the stock trunnion to add length, which is another option.

Curtis was out of stock on the Tantal barrels and said it would be "awhile" before they produced more. The only reliable source of barrels (and fairly well regarded from what I've read) is from here:

High Standard (Houston TX), Tantal barrels are chrome lined, in the white, all journals based on a barrel from OBR (Osrodek Badawczo-Rozwojowy). 14x1 LH threading of the muzzle, gas port already drilled, notched for handguards, extractor relief groove cut. Price is $139.50 + S&H. Order # 1-800-272-7816.

    and here:

Green Mountain Barrel (Conway, NH). Can be ordered from their website for $145 + S&H. http://www.gmriflebarrel.com/search?searchvalue=Tantal.

I have a couple AK74 stocks around already, both longer than Warsaw length, but thanks.

It depends on how original you want it to be. You can substitute the Tantal's RSB with an AK 74 base, but then you will have to use a standard gas tube, as well as a standard AK 74 hand guard retainer. And the Tantal hand guards won't work with the AK 74 parts.

The specialized Tantal RSB works in conjunction with the two mentioned parts.

Good to know. Now the next question is where to find a Tantal RSB. Any leads?

                  Very nice of you sir:

The barrel is a start, even High Standard is back-ordered on Tantal barrels for another month. I'd also like the rear sight base, the cleaning rod, the brake (if he still has one) and the handguards.

I suppose we should use PM for the rest of this little transaction. Much appreciated.

I've built a few.tantals. See if you can find a virgin 5.45 barrel and turn the journals yourself. Mach nailed it with the RSB, you need that special type and the tube and handguards to go with it. RobertRTG has a buttload of Polish parts, great prices too. I got a bunch of stuff from there to build my 7.62 Beryl clone. I had to make some of my own stuff. The Beryl rear trunhion alone was 150$, i'll make my own thank you.
I like the Polish guns, they took the AK to another level with the burst fire and the Beryl is a completly modern ak variant in 556.

That would be a rarity at this point, I don't think I've seen any for sale in the last couple months I've been looking. However, I'm not afraid of US barrels made by reputable companies. I'll probably get the one for sale on The AK Forum (US made, not clear by who, though the owner has tested it and it appears adequate) if it's still available, or wait a month for the High-Standard barrel to run another batch and 35% higher price. I think he said they do about 100 at a time. Everyone who has bought barrels from them has been pleased and I looked hard for reports of external, internal or other problems with their Tantal barrels and found no complaints.

Yep, Mach is the man on those sorts of details. As for RobertRtg, I normally only buy HK stuff from them, I didn't even think of them for Tantal parts. Thanks for that pointer.

I've seen the stock trunnion as low as $75 once or twice (before I considered a Tantal build), but since I'm not using the wire folding stock, I'll leave choice parts like that to the collectors. I don't need 100% factory correctness to make me happy.

Poland and several other countries made the AK their own, the Beryl is the best example of this. I understand the reason for the caliber change, but wonder if they wouldn't be better off if they had stayed with 5.45x39 mm.

It's not on the Tantal, but I'm likely to buy a Sniperhandle left side selector switch, more like the Beryl in function, though not in form. http://www.sniperhandle.com/p1.html

I look forward to a nice shooter. Thanks for the help guys.

Poland is a NATO ally country now, hence the change to 556.

I'm aware Poland is part of NATO. It's my understanding that front line toops may have the Beryl, but second line troops and cadets usually get the older gear. What are they using for a light and medium machine gun? Did they convert PKMs and PKPs to 7.62 NATO?

I wonder if they still train on the Tantals in 5.45x39 mm to use up the stocks of old ammo I'm sure they still have.
