    Relining a barrel

I'm posting stuff in a few forums looking for opinions on a person to reline a 1904 vintage Marlin 1893 in .38-55. I'm not sure what diameter I'm looking for yet, it'd be nice to shoot both my cast black powder loads and smokeless jacketed loads.

Anyway, there have been a few forum posts suggesting different folks but they are all a bit dated at this point. I figured you all might know of people currently doing that work.

I have tooling for 38-55 and a nice match reamer. New shop is not fully set up right now, so not taking work at the moment. Not sure about the 1893 barrel profile and if it will allow a liner. 39/64 or 17/32 OD. I have tooling for 39/64. Get your liner from TJ's. Hammer forged in Tennessee. As a general rule, avoid Redmans.

I tried to post some pics here of the last 38-55 I relined but the files are too big. 1885 High Wall (Mfd 1887). Also rebuilt the block from some bubbas attempt to bush it. I'll try to put the pics on some picture hosting site and link here.

Here is a link to an album of pics I took of one job. Some are redundant, but show some of the detail involved to do this job right. For some reason I cant find the pics of the new block plug and the finished block. If anyone knows how to turn it into a slideshow, please school me.

Nice work! It doesn't look quite so easy as Larry Potterfield makes it look in one of his Midway USA videos.

Yep. The devil is in the details. Little tricks and things to make the final job look and perform good. Murphy is always lurking in the background to apply his law.
                      Larry is OK too!
What are your barrel measurements at chamber and muzzle? I'm assuming its octagon??

I get 0.6780 at the muzzle, and 0.8770 at the chamber end as close to the receiver as I can get. Yuppers, it's octagon.

Thats a skimpy barrel, leaving .073" per side at the muzzle with a 17/32" OD liner. I dont have tooling for that one. I suppose it could be done, probably need to recut dovetails for sights and mag tube rings, etc. 18" twist is all that's available in that OD.

Again, wonderful info! I didn't realized that was on the skinny side. I'll talk to a few other folks. Bigbossman pointed out that I might consider just replacing the barrel with another vintage example rather than relining.
