Is there anyone in the Bay Area, or close by, that can help me out with this one?

    Thanks!

Yup. Make an appointment, and I will un-stick it for you.

You are on the right track.

There is more than one way to skin a cat and this how I do my Mausers.

      First tip.
Soak your barrel threads for a day or so with penetrating oil.

Use a piece of think leather and locate your receiver wrench as close as possible to the end of the action, you'll be able to apply the torque with out deforming your receiver.

I use a hydraulic press (since I have one and I can actually secure my barrel jaws much better and prevent any movement).

Leverage man, it's all about leverage.

Did you noticed the 4 ft. long cheater bar attached to my receiver wrench??
*Edit. and the brewski on the background...ooops.

One quick movement and...... you'll be able to set that barrel free.

Intact threads, perfect and undamaged action

Good luck and enjoy your project.

        I soaked it 3 days

There was maybe 1/2 an inch between the barrel vise and action wrench

I use a hydraulic press (since I have one and I can actually secure my barrel jaws much better and prevent any movement).
I considered picking up a press. I am not sure what else I would use it for, except maybe building AKs, which is a money pit I have avoided so far.

Leverage man, it's all about leverage.
I didn't have a 4ft bar on the wrench, but I did have a two foot handle and was put several hundred pounds of force on the handle.

Love the home made action wrench.

JBL 1967 came over today and we pulled his barrel no problem, reinstalled his newer barrel (headspaced between go and no/go) and he and I lined up (resoldered) the sights twice (dont ask) and bore sighted it.

He's good to go and we both learned something.

You forgot to mention the trigger work, new front site, and rear site tweaking.

I am taking it out Friday to see how it does at 100 yards...and maybe Sunday at 200.

I didn't see you mention what caliber you chose. What manner of beastie is it?

I stuck with 8x57. I found a cheap WWII vintage barrel on the interwebernets.

I had the Mauser at the range yesterday. The sights were a little off at 100 yards, so I need to make some adjustments, but I was very happy.

The ammo I was using is 1973 production surplus, so I think the group below was pretty good.

Thanks again to 6mmintl for the great gunsmith work!

I had (and still do just it's a completely different rifle now) An 1891 Argentine Mauser in 7.65X53mm using 1978 MilSurp ammo it would shoot 1.5" groups all day long. With my buddies cast reloads believe it or not that rifle with original barrel was a solid 1 MOA no BS the gun was better then I was.

I could set up a target at 750 yards and hold a solid 6" group using a 3-9X40mm scope (Crap glass simmons)

Now that rifle has been completely rebuilt to the fastest production .22 caliber ever build. The .220 swift. 50 grain bullets at 4000 FPS. It has 26" A&B bull barrel (I know, junk But I couldn't see dumping $300 in a barrel for a $100 action) a Timiney Trigger, a 4-16x50mm scope mounted with Talley rings on custom square bridge bases I made. A new albeit slightly ugly stock in a 1970's Monte Carlo style that I finished and checkered. The only work I didn't do was the bluing. If you'd like Here's the link to the build page. Argentine build

I have yet to develop loads for it but it should be 1/2 MOA to 3/4 MOA First few group show promise
