Stuck .223 case

I need help with suggestions on removing a stuck case in the AR. As far as i can tell, the round expelled the bullet,dent in the primer,and is very stuck. I used my aluminum .22 cleaning rod and a soft mallet, giving it a whack, but does not seem to work,any Ideas?

Welcome to the forum...I'm sorry to hear about your problems but you may want to ask in the center fire rifle or gunsmithing areas. You will probably get a better response there. Also post a picture -)

BTDT....can you separate the upper from the lower? If so, take the upper off, remove the charging handle and BCG, spray the area around the case and down the muzzle with CLP or penetrating oil, and try to push or tap out the case using a 3/16 hardwood dowel inserted in the muzzle.

If it is a plastic coated, ruptured or split case, it may take more persuasion than you'd expect - try wrapping the head of the dowel with a cleaning patch or two, should be a good fit in the bore. If the case head is separated (or comes off), you'll need a case extractor tool like this: http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/ARR014-7.html



If the upper and/or BCG is stuck, you have a malfunction called a "Bolt Override" where the bolt has gone forward and wedged a casing in the upper receiver. This is a "complex malfunction", and there are a few things you can do to get it out. Get a pair of needle-nose pliers, grab the casing, and bend it out of there while pulling the bolt to the rear. Make sure the upper is separated from the lower first so that the recoil spring isn't pushing the bolt forward. Push out both takedown pins with an appropriate tool (like a Delrin tool or brass punch) and push the upper in the opposite direction of the spring (since part of your bolt is still in the stock). You can pull the bolt out by force but you risk bending the charging handle....but I would not suggest it.

You can also try to "mortar" the BCG out, I've seen this done by an armorer at a rifle class I attended. Collapse the stock. Pull rearward on the charging handle and "mortar" the gun straight down into the ground while keeping pressure on the charging handle. Do it until you feel the charging handle move, even just a little. Keep pressure on the charging handle, reach in to the ejection port and put pressure on the bolt to keep it in place. Chop the charging handle forward while keeping the bolt in the place with your other hand and the stuck casing should come loose.

Good luck - and if this sounds like too much work, or you aren't comfortable doing this, get friendly with your local gunsmith. : )

go to lowes or home depot and buy a oak dowel or steel rod. you want it to fit inside the case, so that you are pushing on the back of the case. insert from the front of the barrel and tap it out.
DO NOT try prying it out with a screwdriver.

NO. You do NOT want to be inserting or banging a steel rod down the bore of your barrel....this is a sure way to damage the lands/grooves and decrease the accuracy of your gun!

Use a wood, plastic, or other soft metal rod (aluminum is about as hard as you want to use), as mentioned above. NEVER steel.

welcome, drop some oil down the barrel and let it sit for a few min. use a brass rod to pound it out. i had a few stuck shells befor using tula ammo.

Welcome aboard! As mentioned in the first reply, have a look and then ask if necessary in the center fire rifles or gunsmithing areas. Most folks don't look into the "new here" area for Qs to A. And good luck!

Welcome, I've also had some Tula steel case shells stuck in the chamber, key key is to get it out asap as the coating on the shells get hot and act like glue when it cools down, the aluminium round you used could have a coating on it the same, I usually have a cleaning rod handy when shooting Tula steel case rounds, so that I can get the stuck ones out right away.
If its been there for awhile try break free, CLP or WD40, let it soak in from the barrel side and try to tap it out.
