Want to paint a shotgun, what material buy in the first place?

I have an idea for a painted shotgun. It will all be painted, as much as possible. or maybe not painted but powdercoated. Or whatever process will give me the look and color that I want.

So now to go get the shotgun. Do I want wood? Synthetic wood? Nylon? Flubber? What is the best material that I can use to receive the colored coating that I want? I do not want it to chip or flake so I think real wood is probably out. I may need Duracoat to keep the color from wearing off, or maybe not.

But the first step is buying the gun and I want to get the one that is going to be the best candidate to receive a new color. Any ideas?

If it helps, I want the entire gun Polar White for starters.

Hehe good idea! Actually the white is just the base, there is much more to go. I just wanted to buy a shotgun that is ready to accept a coating.

Well definitely go with synthetic furniture to start painting wood is possible but less resistant to chipping as it is usually softer that the plastic stuff. As far as the SG get one with a parkerized finish. Bluing or chrome will work but will require more prep than a parkerized weapon. As for the material I use more Duracoat than any other weapons coating. I have tried the Brownell's rattle can stuff but it was a bit thicker and I ended up having to sand a lot of the contact points in order to assemble the parts together. If you plan on using white take into consideration it takes twice as much white paint to achieve coverage. When I paint a white gun I usually bead blast all the pieces till they are completely in the white (removing all the factory finish till bare). As for the synthetic furniture you can cheat buy applying a white or light grey primer surfacer to the parts and cut the material usage in half. This wont work on the main parts as most primers are not heat resistant also the primer build up can shrink holes enough to make reassembly impossible.

Good info, thanks. I plan to pay a pro to do the work though, it's not my art form.
