    Tools for AK build

I was thinking about getting a drill press for some upcoming AK builds. Is there anything in particular to look for? I saw a fairly sturdy 12 speed bench stand drill press at Harbor Freight. and I was wondering if it was strong enough for the job. Should I look for a certain size motor? or anything else?

I was also wondering if a grinder would be useful or if a dremil is all you need to demil the kits.

HF has a 5 speed drill press on sale for $59.99 (38119/44506) that would be good if the only thing you wanted it for was demilling AK's. A grinder makes quick work of it, but a dremel will get the job done.

When I was looking for a drill press I posted a similar question and I ended up buying a HF Mill/drill. Will work for AK's, & will also work for finishing AR, 1911 etc 80% lowers. Not to mention other projects. I waited until it was on sale & used a coupon & got it for around $450 if I remember right.

Yea that's a little more than I wanted to spend. But the more you look the more you talk yourself into it.

You should attend a build party, just to see whats going on.
the cost of the rivet tools and flat bender might change your mind.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.

A cheap drill press is fine. I only use the slowest speed on mine so I don't see any benefit to having a lot of different speeds. The chuck you can hand tighten is handy but the conventional type is probably better. In high school machine shop we were told you need to use the chuck key at all three holes to get the chuck tight. I rarely see anybody do this but I still do it just because.

Pay attention on Craigslist. Try to get a big press, just makes life easier.
