AK build questions?
Tags: None -
depends on what built ak you buy or what kit you decide to build. There are some kits that cost more than a completed AK. There are also some AK's priced as much as 3 or 4 ak parts kits.
For building on your own, start here http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=292985 to learn the ak build process. Depending on your location there may be a build party nearby that will definitely lower the overall investment on tools if you only plan on building one AK.
If you build, you can also save on DROS and transfer fees. Plus it gives you the satisfaction that you built the rifle yourself. -
In general no. It's stopped being cheaper since the price of kits went through the roof. That is not to say you can't find some deals, but you gotta keep your eyes open and be ready to pounce. It's alot of fun though and if you choose to build you'll have an appreciation and knowledge of your rifle that you don't get from something you pick up off the shelf.

From my experience (w/c I don't have enough of) it isn't the cheapest way... Since I'm not one of the cool guys in the cool crowd that gets cool prices.
The average I pay for a build would be at least $550-$600, You factor in the kit and all the 922r compliance parts and that's not including the shop time (I don't own any major tools to build one). Once you build one, you'll be hooked.
AND ESPECIALLY THIS:...and you're in the right forum. Just read the stickies and watch out for Build Parties and reasonably priced parts kit.

where is their a good place to get the kits?Comment

Apexgunparts, Solar Tactical, What-a-country.
I would recomend you buy a kit w/ original barrel as soon as your ready, follow the demill tutorials (there are at least 3 that are all good), then put it on the shelf and watch out for Build party postings in your area. Once you get the kit, call AK builder - tell them what kit you got & have them tell you what you need to build the reciever for it.Comment

There are many places that sell parts kits. Google ak parts kit, and see what comes up. You need to read the tutorials to see what you need to get in the way of the "other" parts to build from a demilled kit. I haven't built one yet but I want to so I ended up picking up 3 different kits and some parts to get familiar with it. It seems like the good kits are around $300 or so. Most don't have barrels. I was told it is best to get a kit with the original barrel because US barrels aren't good. I don't know too much about that. It was what I was told. I think Solar Tactical had a parts kit with the original barrel and threw in all the necessary parts needed for a compliant build but it was pricey, close to $500 I think.
At any rate read the tutorials and posts, and then look around for kits, that's part of the fun.Comment

Yeah, I went different with my AKM 63 Hungarian clone, cost me about $800, and that's after the $100 ultimak gas tube. By going different, bit special, it costs more, but it made me unique for which I was bashed on as it brought slight complications during the build party. But when it ended, I was officially a cool AK guy
. Now I want another, but I think I'll wait it off till after I build my AR.

My virtually unfired AKM 63 parts kit was $99. Oh, it's a matching numbers kit with original barrel. Now, to go back to 1999 and buy more of them.Yeah, I went different with my AKM 63 Hungarian clone, cost me about $800, and that's after the $100 ultimak gas tube. As I am a newbie with a single build under my belt, I think it is cheaper (by a little bit) and faster (waiting on build parties is enough to drive you insane) to buy one off the shelf. That said I can tell you that nothing you can buy will compare to taking a bag of parts to a BP and leaving with a weapon that you built (with a lot of advise and help from the AKTEAM). It is an absolutely incredible feeling to shoot a weapon built by your own two hands! Just my two cents.Comment
