Parkerizing tank help

JB weld, silicone to seal it....really? If you actually weld it, it will be sealed and will be water and air tight. If you lay it out right you can get 2 pans out of 1 4' X 4' sheet with enough drop off to make a lid and only 4 short welds per pan. There are 3 kinds of people in this world.
The wise, learn from the mistakes of others.
The smart, learn from their own mistakes.
The others, well......they just never learn.

Went to a restaurant supply store and bought two 18"X5"X5" stainless steel bread pans. Took them to a muffler shop and had them cut and then welded together to form a pan about 32" long. Set it on two coil type electric hot plates and proceeded to parkerize my 03A3. It was my first project but I did extensive homework online beforehand and you know what?
It came out perfect.

Why not? I have parked 9 rifles and 2 pistols and countless parts using nothing but aluminum flashing and silicone. My spend, under $10.00.
Worst that has happened is someone turned the flame on under the tank empty, silicone bubbled up but is still "acid tight" as the case is.
Haven't felt the need to add a lid, but if I want one it will most likely be more flashing.
Just like the fancy jigs and dies involved with AK builds you spend a lot or a little. I like to keep it simple since I collect a lot of hobbies. If I spend less I can start another hobby/skill. The money I didn't spend on stainless tanks I spent on checkering tools. (well truth be told, it was spent on an AK kit)Comment

You can park half at a time, just rotate it constantly to avoid a line forming in the finish.
Some home parkers have used a ladle to pour hot park solution over the exposed parts constantly and gotten god results too, but I never tried that.

I did the home brew zinc park for my 1919. It came out nice but didn't save much $. Sense then I have just bought the chemicals. It was cool to see the copper cladding from the pennys after the zinc devolved.
I have been thinking about how to finish my current project. I am debating whether to park it or try may hand at hot bluing. With 20 barrels, 20 bolts and various other parts it is worth buying tanks to do it myself. I even found a home brew for that and may try a few small things to see how it works.Last edited by 50BMGBOB; 04-11-2012, 10:24 PM.sigpic50BMGBOB aka 50BMGLAZARUS aka 50BMGZOMBIEBOB aka the UN- DEAD!Comment

I cringe when people think JB weld is worth anything more than attaching a broken figure from your trophy together. IT SUCKS! Especially for anything metal that will be of any function.
I build stainless park tanks in the Sac area if anybody needs one.Liberals could fk up an anvilComment
