start by don't. If you want something the average joe can do, grab a timney. Others may do too but I like timney for simplicity.

        As everyone has mentioned. Timney!!!!!

The trigger in the AR is not designed to be worked on, nor is it easy or safe for a novice to try. Even if you did manage to polish everything up nice and smooth with out changing the critical angles you will not be changing the creep, pull weight, or over travel.
Every one of those issues is taken care of by the Timney. I know they are not cheep but they are well worth the money. It's hard to discribe unless you've used one. I have Timney's on all my bolt rifles.
Now if I was building a precision AR you bet I'd drop a Timney in there right off the bat.

It can be done. It involves tuning the disconnector and making the sear face a little less positive, and it gets more involved than that. I did the factory triggers on my ARs and got them down to 3.8 to 4.2 lbs of pull with a pretty crisp break. I dont recommend doing it yourself unless you have been trained. Drop in triggers are not that expensive compared to a trigger job. Like the others said check out the timney.

If your in Nor Ca. I can tune it for you, I have been shooting and tuning AR's in Comp (HP) (before ther was an aftermarket trigger) since 1983. Relatively simple and you can watch/learn/spread the tribal knowledge for a small fee.

Thanks for the Timney advice. I already have two, and they are sweet. However I want to do this one with my own two hands and the tools I have (or will buy)

There are some very simple ways to make a std AR trigger feel like a high end unit... If your local to me I can help you out.
