    Shaving down frong sight

So, I have decided to install a 13" FF on my midlength Noveske barrel.

So, I strip down the front.

However, I am having a hell of a time pins on the front sight post. I got the gas tube pin easy enough.

I have soaked it overnight in pb blaster, some lube. I even called Noveske up and checked if they do or do not taper. They said they don't use taper, but if it was, go left to right.

I am pounding from left to right (safety side to mag release side), and it just will not budge.

Only thing I haven't tried is taking a torch to it.

So, is there any downside to going at the front sight with a dremel while still attached to the barrel? I mean, I know the main thing is marring the barrel, but I plan on going real slow and taping off/covering the barrel.

Either that or just taking it to a local gunsmith (one local to me in the peninsula hopefully) and having them take off the front post, probably the flash hider also.

I swear, the smith at Noveske must have gone to town on getting those on there as tight as all hell.

I had to beat the hell out of the pins on my noveske, but they came out eventually.

I have had this problem before. Take a towel and place it on a concrete surface to protect the finish. Support the barrel with a piece of wood on both sides of the FSB, leaving a gap underneath the pins. Using a good punch and a mallet (I used a 5lb) beat the ever loving crap out of it. Make sure you are pounding on the right side though, the pins are tapered.

Alternatively, use a "c" clamp with a punch and block of wood on the opposite side and crank it. Better yet if you have access to a press as that is how they are put in at the factory.

Yeah, I with I had a press, would make it easier.

Going to have to keep at it. My punch is starting to mushroom a little. Going to have to get a couple more.

Come to think of it, maybe I will try using my chain breaking tool for my motorcycle.

Same type of thing right? kinda like a c-clamp with a pin pusher attached to a bolt that drives it forward?

With some one would come up with a hand used tool like that for front pin insert/removal from a front sight post.

Alex came over today and with a little heat we popped off the pins, cut down the front sight and recrowned his barrel.

He's ready to come out to Chabot and show us how his finished rifle shoots next month!.

I had the same problem with Colt FSB taper pins, so I bought a press and never had problems again.

Frank was a tremendous help. He made shaving down the front site look easy.

Only thing that I felt good about what that I wasn't crazy and those pins where put on by drunken gorrilla's with a big hammer. However, nothing like a little bit of fire to help loosing things along.

So, now once my hand guards are in, I can get the rifle back together and join you guys at Chabot on the 1st.
