    Are you jealous ????

Just got my polishing stones. I had just about worn out my old ones and needed new ones.

This is more of an FYI then bragging. These are Gesswein blue EDM stones and they work great for polishing steel, even hardened steel. They hold their shape and don't where out fast. How long do they last you may ask?? I'm still using the first set I received fifteen years ago when I was employed as a full time tool maker. T^hey were used at least once a week during that time and closer to a few day a week. They lasted that long. I have just got around to replacing them. These are 6" long .25" thick and .5" wide and the smaller ones are 6" long .250" wide and .125" thick they make them down to .0625" thick if you needed it that thin. These will still be in my box when I'm dead.

Best thing is they are very inexpensive. Between $2 and $5 each so the set you see was $70 shipped.
I'm not affiliated with Gesswein in any way other then a very loyal customer for near twenty years.

Yeah, have to say "no" on that one. What do you polish with them?

I like nice tools but have to side with Big Ron.
Personally like my ceramic stones. Last forever, and will never hollow out.
Only thing I use for my wood working chisels.

Well being that this board is primarily AK and AR stuff It may not be of much use.
When I was a tool maker we used them on dies and molds.
Well now that I'm semi retired from that profession I use them to polish up all the guns I work on.

Need to polish a feed ramp on a pistol? Need to smooth the action on a bolt rifle?
Have a reweld that need a touch up? You use them where ever you need to they are just that handy to have around.

BTW I didn't mention you should soak them in stoning fluid or odorless mineral spirits with a touch of cutting oil added. Once soaked dip the stone in as you are using it. Helps them last longer.

I cut this receiver and polished it out with these stones.
          Check out the finish

Pics are not the best but you get it.

Yeah you wouldn't use these to sharpen tools with. These are more for sanding if you will with something that will follow the existing shape or can be use to keep a surface dead flat.
It's how I can polish an action with out rounding of the corners or dishing out the holes.
It also does a great job of leveling out a welded up area with out having to grind material off.
just sand or grind it close leaving the weld standing just a bit and take a 400 grit stone and go to town. The weld will disappear in a few minutes time leaving you a very smooth surface like it was never welded to begin with.

Im jealous because I just feel like being jealous. In the event that I am not jealous, its because I didn't give a flute to begin with.

On the other hand, thanks for the reference! I could find a use for those!

We always just dipped them in kerosene for use, the full time polishers left them standing on end in a shallow cup of the stuff. You should work up a mini tutorial going through the stones then through the diamond compounds to get to a 2 micro finish without distorting the surface.

I don't know how useful that would be here. But if enough are interested I could put together a quick and dirty Tutorial. Although my selection of Diamond compound is only three grades.

The thing is I posted this simply because I've had great results with them over many years even though they were designed to remove the scale from a EDM surface which it does quit well. They will also polish to a very high degree any steel out there of any hardness without breaking down and losing their shape. (they will eventually wear but not as fast as some stones) On top of all of that they are inexpensive. $20 worth of stones would last a hobbyist many years But I'm not sure these guys would care to know how to get a #2 finish Nor me go through the process just for a tutorial. I do have a PDF on Mold polishing if anyone wants a copy.
