    AK side scope mount problems

I wanted a scope for my AK so I bought one of those detachable
side mounts and bolted it to my receiver. At first it seemed OK and I was
able to zero it in and keep my shots within a couple inches at 100yds.

Then I took the gun home and wanted to remove the scope so I could
clean the gun. The mount would not slide off the little side rail on the reciever.
I even took the clamping screw out completely. To get it off I had to pry
on it hard with a screwdriver. I put some oil on the little rail and put
it all back together. At the range I found that zero had moved (probably
from the prying). An once again the mount was stuck to little rail.

I don't remember which mount I bought (but it did not cost much).
Has anyone had much luck with these things?

I have two. When I put it on my Saiga 308 it's a P.I.T.A. to get on and off. Same one on my Saiga 12 and 545, no problem. I dont know why, but maybe the specs are a lil off on my 308

First off you may need to fit your mount to that rail. I've a few through the years and most need a bit of file work to fit properly. Get yourself a set of small jewlers files and massage the mount so it will slide on and off with relitive ease. The screw will take up what little slack there is.

What exactly do you mean you bolted it to your receiver?
Was there a lever on the mount or Allen screw like these?
          screw on side mount

There are several mounts for AK side rail.
This one. Where it just creates tension over entire rail (but more so in the middle) and a rear end stop from preventing it moving it any further forward.

Then there's this one, where it doesn't really need rear stop and center of the mount has to line up in the middle of the rail space for secure lock up.

If you did not alight the last one with the space of the center mount and forced clamped it then yes, that would create a problem.
If somehow you forced the first mount on the rail and it wasn't align properly then it would be very difficult to remove it as well.

Just like most things, DON"T force anything on and in most cases OFF.
If it does not slide easy on then you probably have a bad mount or the mount is out of adjustments or your not aligning it properly.

I guess the smart *** question is: Why are you cleaning an AK?

The mount was made by UTG and has a lever which tightens a bolt to clamp in the
middle of the small rail. There is also a backstop at the end.

It slid on easliy but after firing the gun it seemed to tighten up.

              MNT-987 and TL-M47SR.

Thanks for any suggestions. I can clean the AK with the scope on
but the gun fits much nicer in its case if I can take off the scope.
Plus I wanted to try the iron sights.
