Removing chrome or nickle plate

If I had several rifle parts that were plated steel what would it take to remove the plating besides abrasive blasting? Any dipping solutions that would remove the plate without damaging the steel parts?

Take it to a plater. They can DE-Chrome or nickel it easier than plating it. They just reverse the polarity at the plating tank.
