I have a original Tantal Brake I picked up from copes with the discription saying it will work with 7.62x39 rifles also. The ID of the brake comes in at 8.65. Is that a little to close, or am I overthinking it?

Sounds to me like you're over thinking it. Some people don't mod their AK74 style muzzle break and put it on a 7.62x39 gun and have no problems. -
