AK ejection problem

Mark51,
From what you describe it sounds like your chamber is overheating and causing the shell casing to stick slightly making the extraction process to slow down. If your shooring steel cased ammo then perhaps the extractor can't pull the shell from the chamber long enough and then let's go of it causing your rifle to jam.
When I shot my 45 pistol I was using Wolf and this same condition would happen if I shot the pistol to fast/ heating the chamber too much.
Shoot your AK slower!

Hi mail clerk. I would like to politely disagree with your reply above. The AK platform should NOT have an issue with rapid fire due to the chamber getting got as it was built to be full auto originally. Absolutely no way, totally impossible, 100% not going to happen, nope, huh uh, nah, no. More info needed to really help the OP. As sj said, nds? Flat build? New AK builder flat, tapco flat?Mark51,

I've had two in 6 months, the one was NYY's gun that I rebuilt. That one was a doosey, there were multible issues that had to be addressed but we did it. There was another one, NDS3, Romy G kit. Clean build and everything looked good, nice rivets, headspace was good, but had an intermittnet ejection issue. The only thing I could come up with was the ejector needed to be kicked out a little and fattened up slightly. I did some reaserch and.some others had come to the same conclusion. I didn't call Harlen and ask his opinion but you can hold the NDS 1 and NDS 3 side by side and see there is quite a bit of difference in the ejectors.
One thing I do when I get something like that is I study the issue and find out if anyone else has seen that before. I don't like to start hacking away without knowing WTF i'm getting myself into, nor should the customer be blindsided with a f**ked up gun because the guy entrusted with fixing it got lazy or wasn't able to swallow his pride and ask for help.
Not saying this is the issue with this gun but keep in mind when trouble shooting a problem. What's the reputation and the experiance of the guy offering the advice. There are 3 kinds of people in this world.

You could definitely be right and I wrong. My statement was the first thing that came to mind that's all. I've been wrong before since he didn't say what type of ammo he was shooting.

Okay, first off, thanks for all the replies!
To answer the various questions: I was shooting from the shoulder and not all that rapid of rate of fire, maybe more like a triple-tap.
I was shooting steel cased Wolf ammo (same as I had used before with no issues).
The receiver was built from an AK Builder flat.
The ejector sounds like the most likely culprit but it seems odd to me that it would not be a more consistent problem.
SJgunguy24 - do you happen have correct dimensions for the ejector so I could measure mine (or would they be different since mine is not a NDS 3 receiver?Comment

The numbers are out there, but I can't find then at the moment. Regardless...ejector fit is something I do by eyeball and I've never had an issue with that method. If you set the bolt and carrier on the rails without the recoil spring you can run it along and observe the interactio between the bolt and ejector. Ideally you want the ejector to protrude as far as possible into the slot in the bolt face withoud causing the bolt to deflect. If there's a noticeable gap between them the ejector may not properly contact the case head and cause FTE's. Alternatively if it wasn't heat treated properly it may be deforming and causing your problem.
If your ejector is looking good I'd start eyeballing the extractor looking for a weak spring or some crap binding it up so that it doesn't get a good grip.sigpicOriginally posted by Dr. ElkyIf your a man who wears white sunglasses, your probably a douche bagOriginally posted by CSACANNONEERI've been know to cross dress and go the other way at certain events.Comment

This forum has sure come a long way. Is was only a few years ago when guys would not even admit to having a short ejector let alone talking about it in public and asking for help to resolve it's shortcomings.NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor

Thanks for the tips tujungatoes - I'll pull it apart tonight and see what I can determine and report back! IIRC there is a bit of side to side play with the bolt carrier on the rails. When eyeballing it as you described are you pushing the bolt carrier to one side or the other?Comment

Since I don't have access to the shop anymore I can't measure the ejector for you. Ideally you want the ejector to fill that area of the bolt with as little drag as possible. I like to put a blob of weld material on there and file fit everything. Watch highspeed videos and see how much that receiver flexes and you'll see why you want a fat ejector.Okay, first off, thanks for all the replies!
