Cheapest option is the Wieger barrel from apex.
Krebs has some 556 barrels for 100$ too. You do know that those 556 barrels will have 22mm trunnion journals, the amd is 23mm. Those barrels will need to be sleeved to work.

What about these from Cope's? 23mm journal and a cool front sight/gas block. Kind of pricey tho...

I would have them double check the journal size. If it's 23mm, than you can use it with an AK 47 front trunnion.

That's also a KVAR barrel assembly that Cope's is selling. Double check.

I have 3 KVAR Bulgarian barrels. Two in 5.45 and one in .223. All 22mm journals.

Another problem with doing a .223 build on a 7.62 base is the bolt. A 5.45 bolt will work, but it has to work with a 22mm trunnion, and an AK 74 bolt carrier.

I think another member built one with a .223 large bolt stem bolt. But that is a rare part. I'll have to look for the members thread.

If you want to build a .223 AK with very little hassle, pick up a barrel-less Bulgarian AK 74 (5.45x39) parts kit and one of the KVAR barrels.

If the barrel is virgin with no extractor cuts it'll work, now will the 7.62 bolt grab the 556 case reliably and will there be enough meat on the ejector to kick the shell out.
Trust me, i've been able to take random parts from different caliber kits and make fully functioning guns out of them.
