    fixing an over gassed AK

Has anyone fixed an AK that was over gassed, if so what method did you use?

The two options I that I found are either drilling holes in the piston guide tube, or installing a heavier spring, is there other options?

You could pull the gas block off and weld up the gas hole to a smaller diameter then re-install it. Don't mess with the barrel though. This is probably what I would do as it's a real solution to over gassing and not a band aid where too much gas continues to flow and operate the rifles action.

A DEZ adjustable gas block could help. Screw it inward and the gas port is progressively covered, screw it out and it opens the port.

Man those things are ugly as sin. Is it a 45 degree gas block or 90? You may be able to apply the same technique as used on PSLs to tame the gas system to a manageable level:

Ugly? Probably not the best choice for a traditional build.

It's a 45 degree drilling, but they could make a 90 degree if properly motivated. I think I'd prefer it if they sold them with no gas drilling at all so you could drill them at whatever angle you needed.

i cant remember the exact size you need but you can thread the gas port hole and screw a little set screw with a smaller hole drilled into it and that would work. i saw it done on a psl a long time ago and if its a 45 degree gas block you shouldn't have to remove anything. i am sure with a little searching you could find what im searching about. ill look to

best quote i could find about it. this is from a psl thread but should work with an ak as well
I don't know if this s recent developement but somone somewhere found out the a 8-32 tap will fit and tap threads in the gas port in the gas block. Then one can thread in a 8-32 set screw with a hole drilled through it. I did this and it is working with a 1/16" hole with 148 grain surplus russki. Another dude on AK forum has shot the German 200 grain match with the same setup and didn't get to wear the rear trunnion as a cheek decoration. The easiest way to do that is tap an 8-32 hole in a plate and then drill the set and remove it, and install it.

Is this the gun that I drilled the port on? What's happening? Are you 100% sure it's overgassed? Call me and i'll help you figure out a fix.

Just realized MadRiverArms posted a link to what i was talking about in my eairler post before me. That should take care of your problem if it is in fact over gassed

Nope SJgunguy, that one is working fine (thanks again for an excellent job BTW), I have two AK pistols that give a lot of trigger slap, I thought it was the original FCG so I replaced them with a tapco single hooks, which on every other AK (including the one you fixed for me) works without issue. So I'm guessing it is over gassed making the dis-connector rotate further due to the force of the BCG when the trigger resets.

I have ground the rear of the dis-connector to allow it more free travel, but I'm not comfortable with this as it does not address the root of the issue, that I believe is caused by being over-gassed.

I also have a few PSL's (3 and counting ;-/, damn things breed over night..........) that I think could benefit from reducing the amount of gas also.

Great idea to install the "plug" with a narrowed hole. Much simpler than my idea!!

Only the steel ones, the brass ones will erode fairly quickly. Most of the jets are brass. A starting orifice (jet) size would be 0.127-0.129", that doesn't appear a common size and the material may prove problematic.

I tried using the set screw method, used a8-32 x3.8" set screw drilled with a 1.16th hole. Worked fine on my PSL, tames the recoil impulse and also doesn't abuse the brass as much.

Also tried it on the AK pistol, also seemed to help, used a smaller set screw with a 5/64th hole.
