AMD 65 build options

Like some others in this forum I purchased this AMD 65 kit from Apex with a 16" barrel:



What are the options for the build? Can we cut the barrel down to 12.5" and then permanently attach the brake to get above 16"? I would imagine the stock then needs to be fixed in place.

Or can we use the 16" barrel (I would then use a gas tube from a Saiga without handguard holder thingys) and then if the OAL is OK with the muzzle brake, keep the stock foldable?

I think both these options are shown in the below images from a previous thread on this forum. What y'all think? How have other AMD 65 builders configured theirs? I was thinking perhaps of going with wood grips, if that's how some of these were originally issued....

You will need to swap out for a longer gas piston, and a fixed stock rear trunnion.

That is an interesting option. I have an extra fixed stock rear trunnion from a romy G kit.

Nope, the standard fixed stock AKM flat.

Here's a tip. You can make an AMD flat from a fixed stock AKM flat. It's just three cuts on the side, and two drilled holes on the bottom. Saves about $20.

Aaakkkkk... You people are evil. For a while now I've been stressing about what to build for the Feb. & Mar. builds. I made the decision for the Feb. and just yesterday found a nice AMD-65 kit at Arms of America, for the Mar. build. (Wood handles, barrel, the whole nine)
Now I see this thread and all the different ways to go with the 65 and AAAKKKK...

I also would like to keep the folding stock. What would be best for that? The longer 16" barrel? Any other/different parts needed that do not come with the kit?

Most likely an AMD 65 kit with a cut barrel...You can do this by using an AKM fixed stock flat and Romy barrel

You can also build an AMMS to complete (there are more)the line.
