    Trigger slap after S-12 conversion

    Hi All,

I recently converted my Saiga 12, pistol grip, polished bolt, and ported the gas system. Got it working nicely with a Tapco single hook trigger so now it cycles the 1 oz 71/2 shot loads, just barely kicking them out enough on #1 gas setting. No slap. But when I fire 2 3/4" high velocity slugs on #1, I get bad trigger slap. Ouch! So what to do? Am I overgassed and need a different plug or are there further mods to the trigger that will correct this problem?

    Thanks... Jon

The trigger slap is caused by the disconnector bottoming out and hitting the trigger. You could try taking a little off of the tail part of the disconnector.

Are there any diagrams/illustrations to help me understand what you're saying? Looks like two hooks for the trigger, the first larger one with a spring pushing it forward catches the hammer as it travels rearward by the bolt when the trigger is pulled rearward and then when you let the trigger forward the next hook catches and holds the hammer until you pull the trigger rearward again to fire. Correct?

I assume you're talking about the first hook which gets smacked by the bolt apparently with enough force to overcome the spring and then slam into the trigger? Seems like it would have to travel quite a ways to hit the trigger so not sure filing off what part would prevent that?

        This is the disconnector.

If you pull the trigger completely to the rear and work the action by hand you'll see it pivot, catch the hammer, and return it to the trigger hook when released. If it can't pivot far enough, it forces the trigger to pivot as well. At full speed you get a slap. This is what chiz was describing.

One way to fix this is to remove some material from the bottom side of the disconnector allowing it to pivot farther to the rear without bottoming out.

Hmm, okay so remove some material from the disconnector at that 90 deg corner behind the pivot? Guess I'll see where it would hit and just grind away?

Do a run through like I described. Verrify that that is the problem(I'd be willing to bet large sums of money that it is). Then start removing material with a file(not a grinder) checking function periodically. You only want to remove as much as needed.

Appears when I did the original conversion I did modify the disconnector which seems like it should have adequate clearance, is able to travel rearward quite a ways. Not sure whether further material removal would help? What do you think? Any ideas? Could it be something else causing the slap? Could the hammer be thrown back hard enough to cause it to slap down against the trigger?

Hammer must be hitting the top of the trigger then. The two tangs of the trigger. Do you see any marks?

I don't see any marks, but haven't fired all that many slug rounds through it, too uncomfortable! Since I already have quite a bit of clearance with the disconnector, it makes more sense that the bolt, with a lot of energy from a high velocity round, would fly back hitting the hammer hard enough to overcome the spring with enough force to smack the trigger. Question is, what can be done to prevent this?

Holy sh*tballs batman!...Yeah I don't think you need to remove any more material.

Hmmm...so you hand cycled it with the trigger fully depressed and no contact? Now I'm confused.

Its broken, i can has saiga 12?

Honestly, stuff like this is hard to diagnose over the internet, it wasnt the obvious problem, maybe try a different trigger in it. milsurp trigger groups sell for $5 on centerfire. Maybe you can hack those up until you figure it out.

Is it possible after doing the gas ports mod it's overgassed? Is there an aftermarket gas plug that would hold back more gas than the stock plug?

Yeah, I agree it's a head scratcher. Where do I find $5 milsurp triggers? What's centerfire?
