Custom 1911 on Colt Frame

I recently inherited a Colt Defender Plus. I do not quite care for the short slide on full sized frame. Is it an outlandish idea to have a reputable 1911 smith use the existing frame, trash everything else and build a me a custom 1911? Basically, is it cost effective to do this, or would I be better off selling the gun and buying a new 1911?

Being a Colt I would bet it would be better to sell and buy what you want.

You also could have a good smith fit an over sized slide to your frame with minimal or no alteration to the frame and have two slide options.

That's pretty much what I did with a Commander I had built . I wanted to rebuild my commander with night sights but the original slide had Smith and Wesson sights milled into them . I ordered a Caspian commander slide with vertical serrations and Heinie dovetail front and rear sight cuts.

Your pistol came out great. I think I will look into this option.
