    1911 slide wont release

Just picked up another RIA 1911 - CSP (3.5" Compact) from RifleGear -

    (Another GREAT PPT...) -

And noticed when the slide is locked back -

It wont release by simply pulling back on the slide.

It will only release by pushing down on the slide release while pulling back on the slide.

Doesnt matter with mag in or out - Loaded mag or empty - Same issue.

This can't be normal with a compact - (I did pick it up cheap used...)

Where do I start to fix this...?

    Thanx...

Check the slide stop plunger and where it pushes against the rear face of the slide stop.
Is the plunger moving freely and putting pressure on the stop?
Does the plunger spring have tension...does it push the plunger out quickly?
Is the rear face of the stop where the plunger pushes on angled and shaped in such a way that the plunger pushes the stop down all the time?

I would start by looking at the incline plane of the Slide Stop where it makes contact to the slide. This will be on the inside of the slide, and might be a little hard to see.

If the slide doesnt move back further than the slide stop notch, it could be the clearance between the spring/rod when compressed. When you use a buffer on certain 1911's there is not enough clearance so you cant pull the slide back any further to release. Clip a few coils off the recoil spring and see if it helps

This might be it - The slide won't move past the stop notch...

If it has one of those shock buffs take it out and see how everything works before cutting the spring.

                Correction:

That was it - Cut 1 1/2 coils off - Now its fine.

Give it a good, thorough cleaning if you haven't already.

                    Cut that 1 1/2 coils off -

Now it's not resetting after firing.

                    I'm guessing I need a stronger recoil spring -

Since I have no issues with HP+'s -

But with FMJ reloads the slide needs a slight nudge to reset.

Can anyone suggest a spring brand/type/weight for a 3.5" compact..?!?!
