    laser bore sighters

    Hello to all,

I need to save a few rounds of ammo per vist to the range. What type of version do you visit when taking my virgin AR-15's/AK's out to the range for the first time. I've been thinking about getting a laser bore sighter but have no real time experience using one. There's so many brands and different versions on the market I need your help to make a decision on one. Off the top of my head I always head to Bushnell brand BUT from what I've read from others they are lousey.

Is there a brand that's better than Bushnell???? Is there a version you recommend for me to get that won't break my wallet/bank????

The laser I bought for my Saiga sucks. Unlike others have said in the past, they won't even get you on paper (at 100 yards), in my opinion.

Try rotating the thing in the bore - if it rotates, then the laser is worthless.

I have multiple telescopes and have found that laser boresights - are just worthless. Keep in mind that telescopes work in seconds of angle, and gun optics work in minutes of angle (60x more gross).

I guess what I'm saying is you'll do better with getting a group w/ scope - don't compensate shot by shot, and then adjust the scope (or iron sights) from that point..

I've had great success with mine but I'm speaking from first hand experience not what someone told me one time.

For ARs, just pull the upper, pull the bolt and look down the bore. For AKs it's a little harder but still doable if you pull the stock too. If you're just sighting in optics, it only takes ONE shot to zero optics at ANY distance. Just use the one shot zeroing meathod and be done with it. Wasting money on a gimick that doesn't work as good as plain old boresighting is stupid.

This only works on rifles that you can see straight down the bore. (i.e. does not apply to an M1A or M1 Garand)

Clamp the barrel of the upper in a vise. Sight it on some object through the bore then with out moving the upper look through your sights. Adjust your sights. Verify by looking down the bore again and checking your sights.

This technique has worked for me for 25 years. No bore sighter needed. gets me on the paper every time and you'd be surprised how close it get you.
My last bore sight was on a .220 swift and I was 6" high and 4" right from point of aim. Not bad.

                    2DoorImpala and Others,

I've seen those bullet cartridge ones before but in reality there's so many types and varaitions I can't say which one is the best for my particular needs.

I have one that's designed for scopes but that's pretty old and still works made by Bushnell.

Personally I don't need some thing fancy..... just a simple one that will work on my AK/30 cal and my AR's/223 to help me save a few rounds. I had thought a little money spent will yield me a savings down the road in less ammo shot or used for more recreation needs. Now a days it's not like 20 years ago when I was able to buy 5-7 boxes of 223 for $2.50 per box anymore. AK ammo is the same for 7.62X39 is also expensive uz I'd buy the cheaper stuff from Russia but they make everything out of steel and is corrosive. My range will confiscate that in a heart beat!

I'd go with the cheapest bushnell boresighter in red you can get. I tried the cartridges also and they sucked....I tried the lookin down the barrel but /shrug I guess I' am a little blind because with a 16" barrel I could barrely see out the end of the barrel surely not enough to get close to paper less my upper was just crap which is possible.

You can't see the target by looking down the bore at 25 yards? Surely you should be able to see a white target contrasted with a brown hill, green grass, or whatever is behind the target.

I've had good luck with mine, typically gets me on paper at 100yrds, even had a rifle where it was pretty much dead on (an inch or so from POA), so to me I find them very useful, I have both the cartridge and insert into the end of the bore types

I have no problem sighting in on a target 100 yards away and a small target at that.
Maybe I have a calibrated eye ball.

                              Guys/Gals,

Too late now cuz I'm heading to the range tomorrow (early) so wish me luck my IO Casar will shoot straight enough for me to use/sight in my AK. So far this replacement appears to be much superior compared to the first but appearances can deceive. The proof is in the pudding.
